Your Japan travel is not limited. So why should your data be limited in volume and in speed ?

Internet for the people. Mifi for the people.

Customer Review/Testimonials

Hi stars87 :s12:

Many thanks for your mifi rental for my 8 days tokyo trip in November :s13: During the trip i needed so much google maps to navigate and so lucky to have data usage on the go to search for some nice hideout at streets of Shinjuku and Shibuya. Data speed could reach about 1GB sometimes which i really can enjoy some dramas when i travel. Really appreciate your kind advises as well along the way and will get mifi from you next September when i go tokyo again. ;)

FAQ
Q: what is a mifi ?

A: a mifi is a egg shaped device that taps onto mobile phone data networks in japan. It acts like a portable wifi, allowing anyone near your mifi (with the password) to access the internet.

Q: why can't i just use my data plan or buy a prepaid sim card.

yes you can. but its more costly, especially if you are in a group of 3-4 travellers. prepaid sim card is data limited and you cannot use as much as you might need. (and you'd always be worrying about busting your daily limit or allowance)

The market rate for a prepaid sim card (2gb) is about 3,000 yen. (about $33 sgd)

The market rate for limited wifi data plans (3G/HSPDA speeds) is about $7 a day (the changi airport guys)

starlight and starlight express routers offer unlimited data and delivery to your home. It makes sense to use star mifi when you are traveling in a group of 3 or more. Our starlight devices can support up to 10 devices (ipad, mobile phone, laptop for work etc) at one go.

Qn: Great to hear that! What is the speed of your Mifi ?

I can tell you the theoretical speed of my mifi unit but that is marketing nonesense and i'm not going to mislead you on that.

Tldr version: No mifi vendor can guarantee you a specific speed or network performance. It is beyond their control. Imagine a Ferrari stuck in a traffic jam. Same principle. No matter how fast the mifi router may be in theory, it will be limited by the network it is in. What matters is real world performance. A Ferrari in a traffic jam is still going to be as fast as the car beside it.

Detailed explanation: LTE capable mifis can reach a theoretical speed of 300 mbps, although in real life conditions, this is NOT possible due to data congestion, other people using network and a whole multitude of reasons.

It also varies widely in certain areas e.g Sapporo is likely to be much faster than Tokyo simply because the urban density of people/number of mobile users in Tokyo is much higher.

it also varies on the wifi band and throughput of device in processing and reciving wifi signals. (E.g the upcoming 700mhz LTE band is less congested simply because very few devices support this band)

This is the minimum real world service standard you will get from Star Mifi:

- video streaming (except for starlight, we are working on that)
- unlimited data
- sufficient bandwidth to Skype anywhere, video call anyone and download medium sized files (nothing exceeding a few hundred MB)
- Google maps all good to go
- Google navigation no problemo

Qn: Ok, im keen, how do i proceed to order ?

see above for our 1-2-3 order process. Easy. or just drop me an email at starmifi at gmail.com

Qn: help i have a question that i am not sure of or uncertain

Talk to us. We are glad to help. email starmifi at gmail.com

Our fine print

Our fine print
1. Docomo throttles your data usage if you surf a large volume of video and download a lot of video from certain sites. Most users won't be affected by this.
2. Penalties apply for tampering, adjusting and modifying the router without permission.
3. 2 days grace period to return item. (must notify if returning late)
4. data service is provided by MVNO service provider and NTT Docomo. The service provided is a rental of MIFI units and on a as-is basis without any prejudice or guarantees on its performance.

Looking into introducing data sim. Will be able to accommodate you if you request.

About 4 - 4.5 hours continuous use. Will be providing a free power bank as part of the rental
