Hi all, I'm running a TP Link HB710, recently subscribed to StarHub 10Gbps through a November promotion.

However, my speedtest shows suboptimal speed;
  1. [5084.2Mbps/ 6058.2Mbps]
  2. [5338.3Mbps/ 6184.2Mbps]
  3. [5460.9Mbps/ 6088.2Mbps]
  4. [5395.5Mbps/ 6028.4Mbps]
  5. [5250.5Mbps/ 6229.0Mbps]

Is this normal?

That is normal.

The CPU of TP-Link HB710 is weak and cannot get full speed with the built-in OOKla SpeedTest application.

No impact to your real Internet bandwidth.

You may need to use a PC with proper 10Gbe network adapter to carry out the SpeedTest to check the real performance.

That is correct and speed test does not really affect your actual bandwidth in the real internet world. Most websites will not be able to allow the full dl and ul speed of 10Gbps so do not need to care so much about dl and ul speed test. Most websites will use internet traffic shaping to control your dl and ul speed when you access the site.

Let me share a bit why i upgraded to Homehub+ ultra speed 10G with Wifi 7 (upgrade from wifi 6) from Homehub+ 1Gbps with a lousy wifi 5 routers in 2023.
SH launched the Homehub+ Ultra Speed with Nokia wifi 6 ONR for new sign up only, it look like a good deal to me as the price is only $88.77 and it is bundled with Netflix Premium which can support UHD and Dolby Atmos. The bundled TV box Pro also better one with speaker that is like a basic sound bar. The promotion is like what i suggested earlier. Further more, my company is going to upgrade our work laptop to something with Wifi 6e and beyond 1Gbps connection and i do not want my home network to be the bottlenet when i work from home. Later in 2024 when our SH had network slow down during peak hours, many of us reported the issue to SH and refer to SH backend for followup. After SH upgraded its backend devices we are ok. Then backend offer me $50 discount + 50% off the offer price for this wifi 7 router. So far so good and i am now no more on contract but i think i should stay even now they increase my price $4 due to Netflix premium. I believe there are reasons why singapore upgrade its Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) which may not be shared to us. May be singapore can upgrade to 25 Gbps in the near future. Since the promotion to upgrade to 10Gbps internet is good so no harm upgrading.

You can call SH to report the issue and ask them to refer to their backend. Backend can resolve the issue remotely.

Thanks everyone for your input. Sharing a bit more context on my setup:

I recently subscribed to StarHub’s 10Gbps broadband plan at $33.59/month promotion. The setup is: optical fibre > Nokia XS-140X-A ONT > TP-Link Aginet HB710 router > TP-Link TL-SX105 10G switch. The ethernet cables used are cat7.

At the moment, I don’t have any devices that are 10G capable (yet), so I’ve been using the Aginet app to test speeds directly between the HB710 router and ONT. The results were approximately 5.2Gbps, far lower than the results we see in this thread.

I contacted StarHub, and they sent a technician over. He used StarHub’s proprietary speed test, the results were approximately 8.1Gbps down / 7.8Gbps up. However, all other speed tests (Fast.com, Ookla, Aginet app, Google) showed results far below 8Gbps.

Just to be sure, the technician replaced the TP-Link HB710 router in case it was faulty.

Here are the test results:
  • The initial StarHub proprietary speed test was quite assuring.
  • However, subsequent speed tests shows deterioration in internet speed. Even the StarHub proprietary speed test showed 6.5Gbps down / 5.8Gbps up.

The technician claimed that it is probably due to the backend's side, but he will submit the evidences and get the backend team to reach out to me.

A re-provisioning will resolve the issue.

No problem at all. This has been mentioned many times in this forum. It is a limitation of HB710 CPU which is too weak to get full speed with the built-in OOkla SpeedTest.

If you want to carry out proper test, get a 10Gbe network adapter for your computer.

Totally wrong answer.

There is no real issue here and nothing to be resolved.
Yes you are right. This router the processing power so weak, i am surprised.

TP-Link EB810v2.2 GHz quad-core CPU
TP-Link HB7101.5 GHz quad-core CPU

AI search:

For typical internet browsing with a wired connection, the slower processor in the
TP-Link HB710 will most likely not result in a noticeable slowdown compared to the
EB810.

Here is why:
  • Processor Headroom: Even the 1.5GHz quad-core CPU in the HB710 is very powerful and designed to handle traffic far exceeding typical residential internet speeds, including full 10 Gbps wired connectivity, which both routers support.
  • Hardware NAT: Modern routers like these use dedicated hardware for Network Address Translation (NAT), which handles the bulk of the data transfer between your home network and the internet, offloading the main CPU for most routing tasks.
  • Browsing Demands: Standard web browsing is not a consistently bandwidth-intensive activity that would push the router's CPU to its limits in a wired setup. The actual page load time is more likely to be influenced by factors like your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) overall network load, server response times, and the performance of your own computer's browser and processor.
So no issue to resolve.

which router are you using for this test?
EB810v but AI say if use a 10G computer to test it will be same same.
