(1) My mother's current Starhub mobile plan is $39.00 (after 15% hub discount);

(2) Her Sony Xperia XA Ultra is about to die off; For old lady of 84 years old who uses WhatsApp to keep in touch with family etc, the Samsung A51 suffices;

(3) I called Starhub. Their minimum plan is $55 for 2 years, and the new A51 phone is $0; Even after a 15% hub discount, the monthly charges are $46.75 (which is $7.75 more per month). Dataplan is 50GB (useless for an old lady).

(4) I called M1. Same phone. Place her on $40 per month, the phone costs $9. Dataplan is 12GB per month. Home has 1GB wifi.

I called Starhub again. The Customer Service (CS) Executive tried to explain, that no matter how, all the Starhub plans have a minimum of $55 for 2 years. Terrible planning. Seems like Starhub is telling me to port to a different telco.

Anyone experienced this hard-line by Starhub? Any Starhub people here can advise?

The trend now is to get SIM Only plan, don't get tied into the 2-year contract. SIM Only plans are much much cheaper and more worth it. Get the Galaxy A51 outside, I got it for my mum too for $400.

As more mobile plans, you can port his line to giga, $10/mth 5GB data with rollover data, 100sms and 100mins, which I think is sufficient for her. Somemore, there is wifi at home, 5GB should be MORE than enough.

------
If you get A51 from Starhub
Phone $0
Plan $55/mth x 24mth = $1320 :O

Phone $400
Giga $10/mth x 24mth =$240
Total $640.

Just my suggestion, giga is a sub-brand of StarHub, more worth it to get sim only plans with no contract. You can get the A51 outside much cheaper though, I got it at $400, but now it's cheaper.

StarHub contract plan for mobile phone is not attractive at all. Go to Singtel instead.

Update on my frustration with Starhub.

Starhub, whatever you are smoking is bad for your heath.

[1]* DEBBIE responded and asked for Account Details.* I responded almost immediately

[2]* ANNE asked for the last 4 characters of my NRIC to verify.* I responded almost immediately.

[3]* ANNE asked me to look at "PROMOTIONS".* I surfed over and found nothing relevant.

[4]* ANNE tells me this is for SIM Only Plans.* Huh? Since when did I ask for SIM Only plan?

[5]* ARIES asks me for more info for verification.

[6]* JACKSON tells me they to call Sales Assistance at 1630, as they are unable to adjust my monthly charges

[7]* JACKSON says "If you would like to reach out to us verbally, you can call 1633. Alternatively, you can let us know your concerns. From your original post, you've asked us to explain the rationale behind the charges. As such, I have mentioned that we are not able to adjust the monthly charges. - Jackson"

[8]* I tell Jackson to go and re-read my original query.

Good grief, Starhub

[9] Please re-read. I did not ask for adjustment of monthly charges.

[10] Jackson - Hi Robert, I've read the whole chat, and I am not sure how I can help. Do let me know how I can assist you further. Thank you. - Jackson

[11] Me - nevermind, read the original post. not this chat

[12] Jackson - My apologies, is this regarding the rebate? - Jackson

[13] Jackson - Our plans prices change from time to time, and that the offerings are different. You can sign up a cheaper plan at https://www.starhub.com/personal/mobile.html#simonly. However, it does not come with a discounted handset.

The 2-year plan comes with a discounted handset, thus it is pricer. If you require assistance or explanation on the sales-related matter, you can contact 1630 for dedicated sales assistance. - Jackson

Me: Jackson - I am aware of the T&Cs of SIM only. It seems that Starhub is not able to understand my query, which is NOT about SIM only, nor rebate etc.

Not sure if I understand your intentions; you wanted SH to customize your device plan to a $40 plan as opposed to the normal/minimum $55? :o so that it remains the same price as her previous plan?? :(

Anyway, just move on if SH is not to your liking. My advice to anyone unhappy with their Telco will be... move on, take your $$ elsewhere.

No.

I just want to find out if they have some other plans that are not widely and openly advertised.

[14] JIV - What I can suggest for you right now is to take advantage of your $100 recontract voucher that is available under your phone number that ends with 1065 that is valid until the 18th of June 2020. You may use the recontract voucher to off-set the handset price. I would also like to recommend taking the $55 2-year plan. And as shared previously, the 2-year plan comes with a discounted handset; thus, it is cheaper. If you require assistance or explanation on the sales-related matter, you can contact 1630 for dedicated sales assistance.

By the way, you may also check your recontract vouchers via the My StarHub App.

To know more about our $55 2-year plan, please see: https://www.starhub.com/personal/mobile.html#2year -Jiv

[15] Me - The $55 comes with a $0.phone. And it would mean I have to spend more on the monthly fees $39 vs $55.

[16] Erl - Hi Robert, we're sorry to hear that you're not a fan of our current plans and offers. However, our mobile offers are constantly on the move. If you require assistance or explanation on the sales-related matter, you may contact Sales hotline in 1630 for dedicated assistance. - Erl

[17] Me - Ok. I guess 1 feedback is to small to care. No problem then.

[18] ANNE - We appreciate your feedback, and we can use that to improve our services in the future. However, if you will need assistance in the future. Thank you. -Anne

Move to sim only plans, if that's does not suit you. Check your phone price online or at the shop and add in your 24 months bill. You might be surprised if that will be a cheaper option. (Phone price online can be cheaper than the SRP)

All telco up their price since tpg is no threat to them anymore.

A51 is selling at $408 at Kasia and RedWhiteMobile. Get the phone from them, the A51 will be XSP version with no telco bloatware or telco settings.

Then port to a $10 plan from either giga or MyRepublic, do check out the relevant threads

OT - do you know where to get the ORIGINAL Samsung A51 S View flip? The one that turns on when you open the cover?

Saves my mother from fiddling the power button.

For low usage scenario, I would recommend SIM-Only plan as well, unless you’ve access to CIS/CORI plans like M1 Enterprise Mobile (EM3+) plan, which comes with 13GB data with unlimited talk and SMS. $34.70/mth With free Caller ID and Roaming to 75 countries using up to 3GB of the data bundle included, and the $9 upfront because it’s the same tier as M1 base Plan with Device ($40/mth excluding 18 months Caller ID).

Overall cost: $34.70x24 + $9 = $841.80

Yes, it’s more expensive than those $10/mth plans, but the unlimited talktime can be more useful to her. Afterall, as you said, she’s not young anymore. She may actually prefer more talktime, so the unlimited talk is something that she can really enjoy. 13GB maybe overkill, but at least it’s not so risky if she accidentally download things via mobile data without knowing. Enable Data Usage Alert so she can know when it hits 75/90/100%.

But if you still think she don’t need so much, something like VIVIFI Lite (3GB/500mins/20SMS) is still plentiful. Yes, data bundle is lesser than Giga (5GB/100mins/100SMS) and MyRepublic Lite (6GB+unlimited throttled/300mins/300SMS), but if main usage is on WhatsApp, maybe the 3GB is enough, if you set the auto download of videos to WiFi only.

I don't think newer Samsung phones like A51 has S View covers now. Mostly Flip covers generally.

Not sure if A51 have original Samsung LED Flip view cover, but it's quite cool. Perhaps you might just want to get a third-party flip cover but no window, qoo10 has a few listings.

Why need to find power button?

Just use double tap to wake :).

Even Xiaomi phones can do it.
