Hi, I’m a noob, we recently upgraded our broadband from 1gb to 5 gb promotion (by paying additional $2.28 more a mth) plan. StarHub provided a Nokia ont/router XS-2426X-A, the StarHub technician connected the 1gb port to our existing Asus router RT-AC86U 1gb port.
My question: can I instead connect the Nokia 10gb port to my Asus WAN 2.5gb port? Will the Asus router performance be improved in term of speed in data/video/gaming?
Thanks
MK

No, the performance of your ASUS router will not change because of such connection.

uh, one piece of info you did not provide is: what device(s) is the 10Gbps LAN out port on the Nokia ONR currently connecting to?

Currently is left empty, not connected to any device.
oh then I think you are shortchanging the bandwidth and download speeds you can achieve by connecting a 1Gbps ethernet port from the Nokia ONR to a 1Gbps on the ASUS AC-86U. Cos by doing so no matter what you do the ASUS router is only "taking in" up to 1Gbps of bandwidth because you created a bottleneck there.

The Nokia ONR has one (up to) 10Gbps LAN port so you want to make sure you are using that to get as much of your 5Gbps subscription as possible.

I don't know what other devices you have and what else you willing to budget for, but some examples of what I have done:
  • connect 10Gbps port of Nokia ONR to 2.5gbps WAN of router
  • connect 10Gbps port of ONR to 2.5G ethernet to USB-C dongle
  • connect the 10Gbps port of the ONR to a 10Gbps switch (all ports up to 10G), then use available ports to connect the 2.5G dongle and to the 2.5WAN of router both
  • if using desktop, buy a PCIE 10G ethernet card?
Sorry I don't have photos of my setup cos I not some deluxe member so cannot embed photos of my setup directly here

I am a long-time lurker on these forums and I also new to getting 5Gbps plan to give me more bandwidth

Thank you for the advice, I’ll try connecting the Nokia 10gbps port to my Asus lan 2.5gbps port. Greatly appreciated

testing

TP-Link TL-SX105 5-port 10G switch. Left-most port is connected to the Nokia ONR 10Gbps port. The three connected ports on the right-hand side are connected to two 2.5G ethernet dongles and the main node of ASUS ET12 mesh routers that have 2.5G WAN.

Speedtest Wifi 6E of ASUS ET12 mesh. I used a TP-Link "Archer TXE70UH AXE5400 Wi-Fi 6E High Gain Wireless USB Adapter" for this test. (this adapter not available in SG. I purchased from Amazon dot com, which is why I keep mentioning my setup is just my own example.)

btw I happened to be connected to NordVPN (Nordlynx Wireguard protocol) when I did the speedtest.

Just signed up for the Starhub Ultrasports 10G deal in Comex and thinking of connecting the 10G port on the Nokia box to a Asus Zenwifi BQ16 10G port. Would I still be able to use the full router capability of the Asus BQ16 even if the Nokia box is not configured for bridging mode since I have no desire to pay Starhub the $15 monthly fee.

Most of the router function will work.

You are now under Double NAT. Asus DDNS may not work properly. Asus Instant Guard VPN server may not work. Asus AIcloud will not work either.

As per the report here, it is possible to contact Starhub to change to ONT without paying for the EB810v. But the process can be painful due to poor support from Starhub side for such request.

Sign at Comex, what is the promotion? Is it the Ultra Sports?

Yeah since I already have Premier league, Sports pack, Netflix and Disney+ subscriptions, it made financial sense to sign for this bundle which not only saves me money over next two years but also try out 10G for free. The free Samsung A15 phone which I sold off helped to offset the 2-pack BQ16 router which I bought for $1368 at Comex earlier.

oh SH 10gbps plan at comex is still offered only with ONR? No ONT option without topping up $15 with router?
What they said was that the Nokia ONR can be configured for bridge mode but need to pay $15 per month. I don’t plan to pay for it and just setup my BQ16 for either Double NAT or just AP mode only since this is not my primary broadband connection anyway.
