Hi, I was recently contacted by Starhub to recontract my TV and was told that I’ll need to switch to the TV+ variant as the Fibre TV has been discontinued and would be unable to keep the existing Fibre TV if I wish to recontract. So I recontracted but am awaiting the installation of the TV+ box

So far I have been reading here and found that we would need to use the Nokia Beacon 2 router if we want to continue watching Mediacorp channels on the TV+ box

My question is why can’t we just connect the TV+ to port 2 of the ONT to maintain the Mediacorp channels as per the previous way like the Fibre TV? Thanks

They are using totally different technology with Starhub TV+ box compared to the old Fibre TV.

Starhub Fibre TV -- using ONT2, which is a seperate network comapred to your normal Fibre Internet. It is a private Starhub network specificly for the Fibre TV users.

Starhub TV+ box -- it is just a streaming TV box, which use the same network as your Fibre TV. They do have some VLAN stuff for things like MediaCorp FTA channles.

Singtel TV -- use VLAN to seperate from the main Fibre broadband network.

You do not need to use Nokia Beacon 2 -- you can upgrade to Linksys Velop MX4200.

You do not need even to use Linksys Velop MX4200 --- you can use any router if you can use meWatch to watch MediaCorp FTA channles. Or you can use a digital tuner plus antenna.

Huh so they are basically somewhat copying Singtel’s mioTV style…? Well here we go again… So innovative of them hahaha

Alright, thank you for the detailed explanation

I think it is cheaper for Starhub in the long run since they do not need to maintain a seperate network just for the Fibre TV.

Using Streaming Boxes like Starhhub TV+ Box to replace Fibre TV is a trend. And using VLAN is a common practice for ISPs. So there is nothing wrong to adopt this approach.

The problem is in the execution and the way VLAN is used.

Singtel is actually worse now -- they put the VLAN into Singtel ONR. Singtel ONR will be the main router for your home network -- yet it has very limited features and weak performance. You have to live with Double NAT or use your router in AP mode. They stopped entertaining ONR bridging request since last March. That is why I do not recomment Singtel for new users.

Starhub is not doing a good job either in terms of Starhub TV+ Box. But at least you have more choices.

The use of the new TV+ box is more advanced and user got more flexible and their Asian+ TV pass already bundled with Netflix standard plan and Viu premium. For English Entertainment TV pass (Got Paramount network which is a movies channel), user get Netflix standard, BBC player, Curiosity Stream App (with some 4K) bundled. For two TV passes i got an additional Disney+ (with some 4k) for free too. I have Netflix standard, Viu premium (with movies, K drama etc etc), BBC player, Curiosity Stream (some 4k) and Disney+ bundled to my two TV pass. For fibre TV, user must pay for the TV contents on the second TV box but no extra TV content cost for TV+. If you want a second TV in your bedroom and you can watch all your Starhub channels via TV+ app on your android TV or google TV without renting or pay for the second TV box. Free to air use Mewatch app. It give user more flexibility and can add TVB anywhere and HBO GO and other App like Prime Video etc etc. Basic movies channels are already bundled into the plan unlike Fibre TV with 3 basic groups.

Fiber tv customers also given SHTV+ app access free (up to 5 devices). So that is same for both.

Anyway i tot cannot load SHTV+ app onto andriod TV ? now can ?

Yes now can. The new TV+ box is android TV box but if use their router it can support free to air channels too. But if use Google play store TV+ App, it is consider as one of the 5 mobile devices allowed. But can not watch free to air channels as it is mobile app. The good about TV+ box is that it can support video streaming app.

Oh I see… Singapore is truly a nanny state 😂😂😂😂 Even our internet connections are now “controlled” somewhat.. I guess the ONR is meant to really plug and play for the less tech savvy people and/or having to manage lesser CPE resulting in lesser costs for them

to add on, often it's a matter of perspective.

example, techies don't like TR-069 citing issues such as exploits and privacy

but the average consumer does't know, and if he does know, doesn't care, or even welcomes it.
no need to configure and manage own network. just give a call to the telco, and they'll do it for you (ignoring the risks and compromises involved, of course. that's the price for convenience)

ONR for home use should be plug and play with just a bit of basic configuration and installer will be able to set up for the user so it will be easier for the user and it will be more convenient. Lesser cost is for sure. Android Tv box also cheaper than Fibre TV box. Then can offer this and that. A good example is their Premier+ la. It is all up to the user to decide whether they want to use Starhub router or own router. Starhub allow user to decide. Plug and Play ONR can also have some basic security features.

With more 10Gbps plans coming, we may not have choices to use ONR. But never mind, I can always live with Double NAT.

Going onboard with SH broadband soon (using my own router and networking hardware) and considering their TV+ offers. But I'm getting mixed advice with regards to SH TV box with and without SH router.

I was informed that if I subscribe to TV+ pass, using my own router is ok to watch only the subscribed channels; SH router is not a must unless I want to watch local channels 5/8 (FTA). However, there are others CSOs who said otherwise - using SH router is a must for TV+ passes even if I dont watch FTA channels.

Any experience on the above?

Using SH router is only needed if you want to watch MediaCorp FTA channels on the Starhub TV+ Box. Even that can be sorted out if you are okay with using meWatch app (you can install meWatch app on the Starhub TV+ Box).

Thanks. I'm thinking to do away the SH TV box and install the meWatch app on my LG TV.

My kid will watch his fave TV+ pass on his tablet during the season.

But if you are a more advanced user, you can follow the guide below. You can use your own main router, but you need a VLAN capable switch and the Nokia Beacon 2 for Starhub TV+ Box.

Can also see my this post if you use two tp-link smart switches. Haven't tried this in practice but I think it will work

No problem without TV+ box.

For his use case, there is no need to get Starhub TV+ Box.

Actually many people now do not need Starhub TV+ Box if their main usage is on the mobile phone, tablet or PC.
