Has anyone tried staying more than just a day trip in Nara? Anything to do there beyond the deers? Am going to Kansai area again but don't want to go Kyoto as I didn't find it nice on my trip last year.

Someone I know stayed a night in nara before. Reason was last min trip and kyoto hotels more expensive according to the person.

How about try another area in kyoto?

Arashiyama is bustling in the day but v peaceful in the evening once the crowds leave.

But me not so keen in temples and shrines. Also not a big green tea fan while shopping in Kyoto also felt meh. Regretted not staying > 1 night in Kobe instead. Previous trip last year I stayed for 4D3N in Kyoto.

Nara also somewhat a shrine-y place. Downtown nara not super interesting.

Ever considered kobe too but when I checked for my dates for a trip some time back, hotel rates more ex than kyoto and osaka for momiji period, so gave up the idea.
