Hi all,

Earlier this year I allocated 6k spread over a few months ($500 monthly) for investment in the OCBC BCIP. Mainly one counter - STI ETF.

It has been around 6 months now and I see a net loss of ~$100. Should I pull out now or hang in there?

Am I just wasting my time and if there is any other way to better invest? I don't earn a lot of money.

Hello guys
Is there a way to buy STI ETF under my kids' names.
Myself and spouse has own accounts and has been accumulating so far.
We also wanna buy STI ETF under each kid name. Got 2 kids - 6 and 8 yr old.
Can pls share ideas how to go about it.
Thank you

STI etf is not a good investment vehicle. Google it and you will see why many said that. Especially the 50% high allocation in the 3 banks. What diversification

Does $6k form a substantial portion of your networth?

If Yes, then you should just stop.

If No, then you should continue. Can consider another global ETF to diversify.

If it’s me, Load world or US etf, long term should outperform Sg unless Sg still have Super growth prospect. Looking at majority of the companies here, doubt it.

2cent.

US may outperform in the long term but it is bound to fluctuate a lot more before going up

looking at him ~$100 loss already panicking, imagine if he buy Dow now at 26k and it dropped to 22-24k before going to 30k, what will happen to him . probably panic sell all at 22-24k.

As likely to happen to SGX...

STI ETF should have lower volatility.

I think it is the only local stock or ETF that one should have.

Buy and hold for now. Once your kids reach 18 years, just transfer the shares to them. Or set up a junior share builders plan with a local brokerage.

Your net loss inclusive of dividend? You can stay on the sideline but it's difficult to time the market. You dare to buy when the fear sets in?

There are better stocks imho. Disclaimers always, not a buy or sell call

(1) vicom - economic moat, the few companies doing maintenance and check for vehicles. Good cashflow and dividend

(2) SBS/Comfort - defensive stock with bus interchange and some dividends

(3) Netlink Trust - another economic moat in SG, dividends OK too

(4) Reits in SG generally. (but overpriced imho now, interest rate will affect dividend)

(5) DBS - global company but overweight in STI ETF

In short, SG have dividend advantage (1 tier tax) but not much growth or value stocks.

It is pretty much at the border. But I haven't invested the full 6k yet. Currently at ~3k.

I guess I can hang-on till the full 6k is invested. Starting slow...

Why is sph still in sti? Must they have at least a counter in a specific sector?

Sph should be long gone if going by market cap

Notwithstanding the fact Singapore Press Holdings is one of the partners compiling the Straits Times Index, SPH is not currently the smallest market cap stock in the STI. A quick check shows that at least Golden Agri-Resources has a lower market cap than SPH.

Sph should be next to go
Maybe, but the earliest next review is March, 2020.

There are some problems with the SGX and its ongoing divergence from Singapore's real economy. Should the Straits Times Index run in lockstep with the SGX's systemic problems, lag those problems, or try to fight the trends? My guess is it'll be the second option.

If you have scb bank acct, u should use scb trading. It is very easy to use. Can set high/low alert to notify u. Min comms $10, or 0.2%.

Otherwise dbs vickers cash upfront also cheap. Min comms $10, or 0.12%.

Lol, $10k is considered lump sum to me. Since u r intending to buy regularly, $3.20 is a good start. Then try not to buy too much when above $3. :p

May I ask which platform is cheaper for trading.
Any way to trade with minimal commision fees and stock still on by us under CDP account?

Currently I'm using MKE(Maybank trading platform), each time cost me commision fee $25 and gst++ which cost me a lot and hard to DCA the stocks. Your feedback is highly appreciated.

Lol, dun quote me on a 1yo post. Those who had bought at $3.20 or above $3 sure not happy now. For cdp, vickers cash upfront is still the cheapest.
