any recommendations?

all books by William J. O'Neil. Read feedback in Amazon.com. It takes efforts and brain to absorb and apply.
nb: if you feel something out there better than buy and hold.

Hi Elspeth,

There are many good investing books around but almost all of them are written for the US market. I have read a good book written in the Singapore context. It is "Your First Million - Making it in stocks" written by Dr Michael Leong who is the founder of ShareInvestor.com. I have never met him in person but have communicated with him at length online.

I have written a long review of the book. No commission collected :). Wrote it out of gratitude to a person willing to share his knowledge. You can visit his new blog at http://pertama8.blogspot.sg/

are William's bks truly newbie-friendly? lolz. cos " The How to Make Money in Stocks Complete Investing System: Your Ultimate Guide to Winning in Good Times and Bad " and " How to Make Money in Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times and Bad, Fourth Edition " dun really look too friendly for beginners after reading the reviews...

also between the Intelligent Investor and the 2 bks above, which would be a better read for starters interested in investing in stocks?

There's no hard and fast rule to determine which book. Afterall each of us is different a book might suite one and another depending on one's trading experience and life encountered for emotional control. If you are dealing with local market, start off with Dr Leong first it gives all the essential stuff required for a newbie. Even I am in the market for 10 over years I felt Dr Leong could have save me thousands if the book was published earlier.
