Hi all,

I am facing high temperature issue with my new i7-6700k processor. Running everything in non AC environment at stock clock and bios default. Mobo is Asus Maximus Hero VIII Alpha and cooler is GTX h110i. Idle temp is around 45c. When i ran Aida64 stability test/Realbench, all 4 core temp spiked up to 95c...stopped the test before my cpu got fried. Re-seat the cooler multiple times and reapplied MX-4 thermal paste with 5 different methods (pea, x, line etc) but there was no change to the temp. Also changed the case fans orientation and tried using cardboard as case method. Tested 12hr mem86 for my rams without error.

I have seen others running i7-6700k 4.8ghz at a much lower temp (50c+ aida64) than my stock clock cpu. Dont think intel will sell cpu that runs at such alarming high temp. Anyone know the cause or solution to the high temp?:s11: Thanks in advance.

Have you checked that the cooler pump is working?

Yup its running. Corsair link reported pump rpm at about 2000rpm (balance setting). Checked the tube physically too and can feel its vibrating...

to eliminate the possibility of a problematic H110i, do you have another cooler to test with?

in any case, what is your vcore showing as under load?

Yea..tried with hyper 212 evo and Frostflow 120L aio.. even more alarming temps...:(

Default bios setting shows voltage is set at 1.328v but whenever i reached Windows...HWmonitor shows that its running at near 1.4v all the time. Even so, i have seen ppl running 1.4v at a much lower temp.. 95c (not to mention i stopped the test b4 it got higher) is alarming for a H110i cooler.

Encountered exactly the same problem previously.

Bro i experienced something similar.but it was resolved.

You can try changing the way the tubes are oriented to prevent kink that might affect performance amd strain that might cause uneven tightenting of the water pump to the cpu.

When you remove your cooler do you observe if the TIM is well spread?
Im just thinking maybe the contact is not good between your cooler and cpu...

1.4V is an ok load voltage, even for stock. if the spread TIM method doesn't work, then it's very likely a CPU problem, initiate an RMA with Intel, or go back to the shop where you bought it from to have it checked out and exchanged.

Had a similar issue with the original H110 and it turned out that the mounting pressure was not sufficient. I did get a H110i GTX after that and have no issues. Try exerting some pressure on the pump and see if the temperature drops?

Thanks all for the inputs.

Encountered exactly the same problem previously.

Solution : change Vcore settings in BIOS from Auto to Adaptive

I can downvolt to 1.24v and ran 4.5ghz Aida64 for 12hrs with no issue. However the temp at such a low voltage is still around 87c+ max for the benchmark. If voltage really is the problem.. why would intel sell us something that is un-usable at stock.

Will try that. I also noticed that if the screws were too tight.. the mobo would flash the 41/55 error code and the pc would not be able to post.

Yes, the Tim is well spreaded so i dont think the issue is because of thermal compound application..

There is no problem with your i7-6700K. The problem is with the Vcore settings on Asus mobos.

Just change it from AUTO to ADAPTIVE (Vcore settings in BIOS) and your voltage will be back to normal (i.e. ~1.2V max @ stock clock).

If i could get the pc stable at 4.5ghz 1.24v..shld i still initiate a RMA? What bothers me is the chip is running stock setting at 1.4v with temp 95-100c. Most users could run 1.4v at 50-60c That means my 1.22v is still running hotter than the "normal" i7-6700k.

Did that too when the pc is running Windows. No change to temp when exerting very mild pressure. PC locked up/froze (no BSOD..just freeze there) immediately after exerting slightly more pressure. Need to loosen the cooler screws b4 i could even get the PC to post. Guess skylake chip couldnt take as much pressure as the previous gen.

The overvolt is the key cause of your heating issue.

I understand that i will be able to achieve a better temperature by downvolting (be it adaptive or manually.) But what worries me the most is whether the chip is faulty. 1.4v shld run at just 50-60c max with h110i no? 95-100c at just 1.4v seem a tad high to me.

That is indeed weird.
I am running 4.6Ghz with my H100i and it does not peak past 75 degrees on LOAD.

Can you check if the USB wire to the cooler is fitted to the motherboard.
I had an issue where my installer did not connect the wire and the Corsair Cooler was running on Quiet mode on both fans and pump as default. Definitely not something you should set it to when overclocking.

Do check and make sure you install the Corsair Link 4 software to change the settings of both the Fan Profile and the Pump. I usually set the configuration to Balanced and Pump profile to Performance.

Try that and see if it improves.

There's nothing wrong at all with ur chip. Silicon lottery is not covered under warranty. 1.22v 4.5ghz is very decent already. For the record, average chip does 4.4ghz 1.2xv. If its 4.6+ at stock 1.2xv is a good silicon alrdy.

1.4V is not overvoltage lah, and 87C using a AIO water cooler on 1.24V vcore is not normal temperature, even with SG room temperature.
