i like ssd becoz of transfer speed portability & storage size. but read that it's not suitable for archival as stored charges dimished overtime.

Archival best is still tape drive. But our level, easiest is Raid 1 but problem is both drives are onsite. Cloud storage could cost a bomb when hit the TB stage.
Magnetic tape drives are very lasting, but its uber slow. So seriously if you are transferring GBs of data, be prepared to pay for a lot of tapes and very long transfer times.

With SSD-s, even though they have no magnet disks, or moving parts, stored data will degrade if they are not being used (not powered on). Consumer grade SSD-s should be powered on at least once every 6 months. For server grade SSD-s, it is advisory at least once per month.
So all you need to do is connect the drive to a computer and browse the contents. Less than a minute should do. Just open an image, or edit a text file. Then leave the drive on for at least 10 minutes. It will automatically refresh the cells that need refreshing.

Dunno how zhun this is - this guy says just connect to PC, browse for a bit and leave connected for 10 mins.

I just want to call out, the hard drives nowadays are generally not built to last this long nowadays based on my experience. So if you choose a mechanical drive to backup data, there is also a high chance it may not work after some time.
When it comes to archival, you must consider having redundancies when backing up. In addition, you should also consider if it is worthwhile to archive some of these data. I used to hoard a lot of files/ documents, which I figured at some point that I actually don't use them. In the end, I've deleted all of them except for my family photos and videos. For these, I previously stored them in Bluray discs, and now storing them in SSD and cloud (iCloud and Microsoft Cloud).

Simple solution. Raid 1
For normal storage, HDD will do. If you are worried the HDD kaput and your prawn farm GG, get 2 for RAID 1. If not, you can also purchase cloud storage and store in cloud.
SSD is basically flash memory, if the memory gets corrupted
data will be lost as well as there is a write cycle.
I would get a good portable Hard disk like from Seagate
or get a NAS but NAS you can't carry with you.
Tip from me, if you are using portable hard disk.
Shutdown the PC before removing.
Safely remove does not cut the current to the HDD thus
it is still spinning.
If the HDD is still spinning and you just pull out.
Overtime the HDD will spoilt and data will be corrupted.
Another trick you can do would be the seedbox concept. Basically create a vpn network between your local drive and an offsite drive/nas like at your workplace. This one is more to dump your files rather than do an image backup.
The chance both locations are compromised is highly improbable. Only thing is both locations ideally should have unlimited WiFi.
