wow how long you take to do that upload? Can't imagine the downloading again

its pretty fast if you direct upload via hdd itself but I am the kiasu type who uses another cloud provider like Google Drive/Mega as redundancy so it'll take longer.

The data are store as long term archival so frequent access is not expected unless I lost my data and need to retrieve from the backup cloud.

side track....1 of WD Green suddenly went bonkers after i unplug and plug back. Initially saw CRC errors; but after i use chkdsk, it seems fine. 2nd problem came right after where the drive seems unreadable, i change sata ports then seems fine again.

I notice the raw read error drop quite low. Does this mean the disk is dying?

What are you guys using to store your movies etc? Referring to more than 4TB capacities.

Thinking to get some new Seagate IronWolf, anyone using? My WD Blues and Greens only last a few years before all the nonsense of failure start coming.

Using 2 units of FreeNAS server, one as media library 8x 4TB (WD CMR Red) HDD, another is a recently upgraded replication server 4x 8TB (Ironwolf) for the media library. Both connect to UPS. Never lost any data since I started using ZFS 10yrs ago. Lived through quite a few worst case scenario till this day.

Avoid consumer RAID systems if you are serious about data integrity.

*NOTE: Do yourself a favor, avoid SMR drives.

Who is using SMR hard disk just as a single hard disk? No RAID.

If got power failure, will SMR hard disk be more sucepetible to data loss than CMR (or PMR) hard disk?

dont spread fake news. smr drives are fine for personal archival storage. it is unsuitable for raid, which is not what rocket3 is looking for. it is of course preferable to get cmr drives if they can be bought at the same price, but some models have shifted to smr only so sometimes it cannot be helped.

How about Toshiba X300? Cheap, non smr but noisy.

just got a x300 4TB and suprisingly can hear noise when transferring file, as compared to my WD 1TB Black

I use a Seagate Ironwolf but I realize there is no need to keep all those movies files anymore. Once i watch a show, i seldom re-watch it again. So I build a 8TB NAS and realize about 5TB is used to store pretty useless files

Just don't get the SMR drives.

SMR can be used in a NAS, if you want to archive/store stuff - you write once and that's it.

However, do not use SMR HDD as RAID in your NAS.
