hope for some help here...

current using dlink 323 with 2 x 660gb on raid 1.
using for many years... but recently got loud shreiking sound from the 323... seems like fans ball bearing has worn out and its making all the noise...
just afraid that my dlink nas is going kaput soon...

guess its time for a replacement.
main usage is just to backup my docs, photos (from cam and handphone) and video.
a) mapped a x:drive to the nas.
b) scheduled synctoy to run every 1am to backup selected directories so that any new files and directories added in will be sync to my nas especially when i transfer photos from cam to my pc hdd.

i targeting a synology ds215j. maybe throw in 2 x 3TB red WD hdd.
this will allow me to do a) and b)?
or is there a better nas to get for a) and b) instead?

Most NAS do what you require.. Those are pretty basic features.

How fast were your old NAS growing in terms of disk usage? Do you want to consider a 4-bay, I mean since you are changing/upgrading...

Hmm... On a side note, what happened to the Storage thread? So much harder now to find/help in specific technology area...which makes me a bit lazy to read at all.

Not to hijack the threat. What about QNAP or Asustor? Are these 2 brands good? I do know some brands of harddisks doesn't work well with Synology NAS though. Still comtemplating what to get.

Hi I wouldn't recommend WD Reds. Some people may say they have no problems and then you have people like me who has RMA'ed WD Reds seven times over the past 3 months due to them falling out of the array because of SMART errors, bad sectors and making screeching, cracking sounds.

The Storage as well as Monitor sections have been merged into the Hardware Clinic for sometimes already.

I have used Thecus, Qnap and Synolgy. Still using Qnap 4 bay and synologgy 8 bay.
Any brands of NAS would have a compatibility list of HD.. And any brands will have their bugs. Know your reason for getting a NAS and how you are using it.. dun save on 'good' hard disks

Yeah just read about. Personally I really dun like all different topics to be merged... It's like having 1 folder with will all sorts of files or like a database with only 1 table. messy. Or maybe I am OCD. Or maybe I should be talking about this elsewhere...which right now I'm so lost , I've no idea where...

Perhaps we can create some sub groups/ folder...?

Any experts here can advice which HDD to get? WD red Nas 3tb? or seagate?

I bought a Synology couple years back from Challenger because they were having interest free installment for DBS/POSB cards :D

Anyway if you have the budget, I'd suggest a 4-bay NAS so that you can do RAID to protect your data and still not limit your capacity too much.

Newer NAS 2 Bay also can do Raid. Nowadays NAS HDD capacity is getting bigger. Max capacity can go up to 12TB for now.

Mine is a 2-bay Synology. At that time I only bought 2x 3TB, so it was either do RAID 0 to achieve 6TB (5.xx after formatting) but no protection, or else do RAID 1 and limit to 3TB (2.xx after formatting) but data was protected.

My NAS is used mainly for torrenting, so capacity is crucial for me =:p

Consider HP Microserver too, they beat most brands in terms of performance and price :)

If you're thinking of getting the WD MBLD system. Please do not get it. Just to share a bad experience here. I have absolutely zero confidence in WD now after 3 hdds failed on me, both during the warranty period.

1 was a portable hdd. Fine, maybe I bumped it and it got damaged or something. I paid (dearly) for recovery once after all else failed..

So I changed it to the My Book Live Duo and set it on a RAID 1 setting. It went down while I was out of town. This is a combination of 2x3Tb hdds. On a RAID 1 setting, if one goes down, the other one should be ok right? No, this is the conclusion I got from a 1 month long ding-donging remote assistance troubleshooting. No, you can neither bring your hdds down for diagnostics nor will they provide any on site support. What they have is a drop off point and will not be able to do any form of diagnostics for you even if you bring your hdd down... during the warranty period.

The main point is that, even if they can replace you with a new hdd, seeing how reliable their hdds are, I'm not sure if you want to invest your time and effort on their products anymore. So now, I'm stuck with 2x3TB that cannot mount and potential loss of data wondering if I should consider data recovery... because WD fail me 3 consecutive hdds in a row.
