Hi all,

I have recently purchased a GTX 1050 laptop with an empty 2.5" storage bay. While it has a m.2 128GB ssd for windows OS, I think I'd need extra storage as I'm intending to download games on it. The laptop costs 1.2k and I'm intending to sell it after 8 months of usage (the laptop has 3-years on-site warranty, so hopefully can recover 80% of the costs).

I have considered 4 options, but I'm undecided as to which one is the most viable.

[1] To buy a 1TB internal HDD (~$60)

[2] To buy a 1TB internal SSD (~$210)

[3] To buy a 1TB external HDD (~$60)

[4] To recycle a 500GB internal HDD (i got it when I upgraded my dad's laptop to SSD, but not sure if there's any complications)

[5] To use the 500GB internal HDD as external HDD via the Orico enclosure (if there is any potential complication in [4])

Go buy a dual HDD bay NAS lah . What year is it now? You still want to use high capacity HDD without redundency? lol

I think you may be too optimistic about the resale price. The truth is laptops depreciates the most once you buy it because they cannot be easily upgraded, so tend to get "outdated" faster.

Anyway for SSD, I would just recommend getting 500/512GB. No need for big storage because you won't play that many games at one go. Finish the game, delete and install new ones.

Get SSD.. I've a 256GB SSD with 1TB HDD on my desktop. 256GB SSD not enough for me, I've got no choice but to store my Steam games onto my HDD.

Edit: Just realised you're buying for a laptop.. If you're planning to add an internal SSD, it will void your warranty. And as what watzup_ken says, 512GB should be enough unless you do a lot of media editing work

This is a good plan. Honestly, installing game on SSD is not going to make it run with faster frame rates. It will only cut down loading time. I used to do that because some games update too often, and I don't want it to kill my SSD.

okay la i managed to get back 60% of my costs for a 2-year old dell laptop...

but if this laptop depreciates too much then i might just keep it

regarding the warranty, i have verified with lenovo that the warranty wont be void by adding a hard drive

omg SSD so cheap now. I use like 10 SSD , from 8 years ago from OCZ Vertex, crucial until now 1TB 970Evo.

Not even 1 ssd die on me. I'm heavy downloader, I run torrent ( upload and download directly to my SSD)

Also, for some games like PUBG, everytime got new update, I uninstall and download again.

SSD greatly reduce loading time, which are better than faster frame rates imo .

You cant notice 10 fps diff but you will definitely notice the diff when your game has alot of loading screen.
Or some games like PUBG, it's between life and death when the house and building load faster before you parachute in.

Last time not too sure. Moreover reviewers keep mentioning about limited lifespan, which made me even more worried. But nowadays I don't really care anymore. Like you said, I still have an Intel X25 G2 160GB is still at 99% health over close to 1 decade of usage. I used it extensively, but it is very hardy. Haha.

And yes, loading time will improve a lot in some cases.

I have a 250GB external SSD (Samsung T5). Can I put my games there to play?

Also, just curious, is gtx1050 sufficient to play pubg at low settings? tried googling but got mixed responses
