The 2011 Mid-Range 120GB SSD Roundup

A year ago whenever I'd request an SSD for review I'd usually get a 128GB drive built using 3x nm 4GB 2-bit MLC NAND die. These days the standard review capacity is twice that as most drives ship with 25nm NAND, using 8GB die. Seeing a bunch of scores for 240GB+ drives however is frustrating to all involved. At these capacities you're almost always looking at two die per NAND device, which has significant performance benefits due to interleaving. Most SSD controllers have eight NAND channels and with sixteen NAND deviecs with two die per device that's four NAND die that the controller can interleave access between for each channel. The 128GB drives by comparison half the number of NAND, which only allows the controller to interleave requests among two die.......

The C300 is nothing new, we reviewed this drive last year. I still don't have a 128GB version of the updated m4, however as we discovered in our review of the 256GB m4, performance isn't necessarily better than the C300. In many cases the m4 is actually slower than the C300.

I don't understand why would they put a C300 in the Round up.
they don't have an updated version of the 128gb m4 but they already concluded that it's not as good as the c300. No matter good or bad i think the review is not complete
without it.

It is NOT a SSD; it's a mechanical HDD with a small amount of NAND flash built-in, for internal caching.

It is a 500GB HDD with only abt 4GB of SSD on it. It will then analyze your disk access whenever you use it, and store the most frequently accessed data on the SSD for faster loading.

Does sequential read/write matters in SSD?

where does the OS actually do a sequential read/write?

Considering between a crucial m4 128gb & OCZ max IOPS 120gb.

leaning towards the crucial but undecided because of the sequential read/write

In terms of random 4k, about the same, which is the most impt factor in SSD.

Anyone to enlighten?

Sequential R/W if you everyday copy files here and there.. esp BIG files..

For most OS/program operations, random 4k R/W matters more. Sequential R/W numbers just tends to make the drive looks good..
