hi folks, anyone knows where i can get intel 320 series ssd 120/160gb? seems like the shops i asked all out of stock... :(

I got my Intel 320 160GB from PC Themes on Sat.
It seem like they only have a few 160GB left but the 120GB seem to have more stocks... I check with Best Bargain & Fuwell but both OOS. Fuwell even told me that its a market-wide OOS but still.....

However, from recent years, CPU speed almost doubled very 6 mth (moore's law?) while HDD performance not as much improvement. Hence, HDD is fast becoming the bottleneck.

moore's law is every 2 years. and HDD performance doesn't lag much behind moore's law either. go look up what a HDD performance was like 10 years ago.

Was talking abt the last 2 years..

HDD now and HDD 2 years ago got double the performance?

5 years ago.. server spindle is already 10krpm.. now, main stream desktop and laptop HDD still 5400rpm, 7200rpm? WD got a 10krpm I guess.. but that was since 2 years ago?

How much increase in transfer speed for the past 2 years?

The one BIG improvement, that we all can see, is the increase in capacity and lower costs..

However, we're talking about performance/speed here, not capacity..

Has this been posted ("8MB bug")?

Intel to owners of failed SSD 320s: we're 'aware of the customer sightings'

SSD power loss report updates

Intel is aware of the customer sightings on Intel SSD 320 Series. If you experience any issue with your Intel SSD, please contact your Intel representative or Intel customer support (via web: www.intel.com or phone: www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contact/phone) . We will provide an update when we have more information.

In Year 2000,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/hdd-roundup-2.html#sect9

Quick Facts, Ultra ATA 100 has a max interface speed of 100MB/S. The IBM 75GXP that was test is a 20GB model has a Intel IOMeter (file server) linear read @ 68MB/s and Max IOPS of 368.

Fast forward to today in 2011, 11 years later. Following moore law of 2 years for double the performance. so in between, it should have double the previous performance 5 times, or 2*2*2*2*2 or 32times more than the IBM 75GXP. This should gives us a product that has a
- Interface speed of 100MB*32 = 3.2GB/s (achieved today)
- Read speed of 80MB/s * 32 = 2.176GB/s (considering the fastest single SSD performance... nope.. if you consider single hdd, its worst.)
- IOPS 368 * 32 = 11,776k (a vertex 3 240GB gives 40k, so its achieved today, the fastest SAS harddisk gives 398IOPS, so its a miss)
- Size? 20GB * 32 = 640GB (easily met by all hdd and SSD, less the price consideration)

So did Harddisk technology improve as much as its other counterparts.. I would say generally, its more miss than achieved.

and according to your astute observations, did CPU perfomance double every 6 months in the recent 2 years?

spindle speed does not equate directly to HDD performance, there are other factors involved. does a Pentium 4 3.4GHz perform at the same level as a i7-2600 3.4GHz?

:)

Moores Law didn't just state performance improvement, It also applies to the density per cost. Moores law however applies more to transistor and integrated circuit. A better formula would be Kryder's Law for storage purposes.

I anyhow BS one.. ignore it..

forgot where the 6mth come from.. just checked that wiki states that it's 2 years. I "guess" the processor core double from duo core to quad core?

thanks pal. but i can't seem to find PC Themes business number to call... do you have?

yah a bit upset with fuwell when they also told me OOS and no ETA... not very honest if they claim there is market-wide OOS...

Update: ok... found PC Themes number and reserved one piece. thanks superman! :)

Good for ya mate... I gotta say this, though it has been said many times by others. You will not regret getting the SSD..! hahah...

The improvements are just... :D
