For $1k is a comfortable budget. Get Crucial C300 256Gb and you still have spare change to buy a 2nd budget SSD to use as data drive.

shouldn't the budget data drive be a HDD?

For the SSD and pure speed , how about trying a SSD + RAID card all in one (value for money because this is RAID 0)
OCZ RevoDrive 240GB - $900 after shipping and GST perhaps
as far as I know only this one is fully compatible with all boards and can easily be booted from

Normal SSD Drives
OCZ Vertex 2 240GB - $840 after shipping and GST
Crucial C300 256GB - $860 after shipping and GST or $999 in SLS

For DATA drive (left around $150?)
If 1TB enough
Samsung F3 1 TB (approx $80)
WD Black 1TB (approx $140)

need more space but can compromise on slower speed
Samsung F3 2TB ( approx $150)
WD Green 2TB (approx $160)

eek forgot to state i will be using this in a dual hard drive bay laptop, it does support raid 0/1 if im not wrong its the sager np8760

Intel's 3rd Generation X25-M SSD Specs Revealed
If these numbers are accurate, the new Intel drive should be roughly equal to Crucial’s RealSSD C300 and SandForce SF-1200 based drives. There are many different ways to measure this data however so the numbers may be higher or lower in our tests. Note that performance could also go up by the time drives are available as there's still a lot of tuning going on right now. I'd say that at these performance levels Intel had better be very aggressive with pricing because I'm expecting much better from the next-generation SandForce drives.
