SSDs in the sweet spot: Modern contenders at 120-128GB
Today, 120-128GB SSDs can be had for around $200, putting them right in the sweet spot typically occupied by our favorite CPUs and graphics cards. Since we don't yet have a real favorite among the current class of solid-state drives, we've spent weeks running nine SSDs through an expanded storage test suite on new Sandy Bridge hardware. Over the following pages, we'll take a closer look at Corsair's Performance 3, Force 3, and Force GT; Crucial's m4; Intel's 320 and 510 Series; Kingston's HyperX; and OCZ's Agility 3 and Vertex 3 SSDs to see which ones deserve a spot in your notebook or desktop PC.

OCZ Z-Drive R4 CM88 (1.6TB PCIe SSD) Review
In our last SandForce SSD roundup I talked about how undesirable the consumer SSD market is, at least for those companies who don't produce their own controllers and/or NAND. There's a downward trend in NAND and SSD pricing, which unfortunately squeezes drive manufacturers as they compete for marketshare. The shrinking margins in the consumer SSD space will ultimately drive companies out of the business, consolidating power in those companies who are fine operating with slim margins. There are other effects, such as insufficient validation testing that result from this price crunch.

Public companies are under an even greater pressure to maintain high profit margins. Investors don't care about good product, they care about good returns. What is a public SSD manufacturer like OCZ to do? Go after the enterprise market of course.

OCZ has quietly addressed the enterprise SSD space for a while now. Today you can custom order an OCZ Deneva 2 SSD which is an enterprise focused SF-2000 based solution. OCZ's enterprise drives are fully customizable down to the controller, firmware and NAND type on-board. If you want an SF-2000 drive with SAS support and SLC NAND, OCZ will build it for you.

In the enterprise segment where 1U and 2U servers are common, PCI Express SSDs are very attractive. You may not always have a ton of 2.5" drive bays but there's usually at least one high-bandwidth PCIe slot unused. The RevoDrive family of PCIe SSDs were targeted at the high-end desktop or workstation market, but for an enterprise-specific solution OCZ has its Z-Drive line.

Intel SSD 520 Cherryville Launches 4 November
The SSD 520 "Cherryville" family is slated for this November, the 4th of November to be precise. That is when one can expect market-availability. The second important bit of information is that SSD 520 is poised to displace the SSD 510 "Elmcrest" series, that's currently out in the market, available at 120 GB and 250 GB capacities.

SSD 520 series, according to fresh information, is built around the idea of providing more capacity choices to the consumer, higher throughput, and lower latencies, compared to SSD 510 series. The new SSD 520 series will be available in capacities as high as 480 GB and as low as 60 GB; provide trasfer rates of 520 MB/s sequential read, 500 MB/s sequential writes (compared to 500/315 MB/s on SSD 510), and 40,000 IOPS read/write 4K random access throughput.

Samsung SSD 830 pricing is not very attractive, hope they have a mainstream model at a lower price...

"Pricing update: 64GB: £108 / 128GB: £190 / 256GB: £350 / 512GB: £700. All prices are inclusive of VAT and are approximates. As expected prices are competitive - the 830 is going to do very well in today's SSD market."

Wanted to get the X25-M G2 160GB and flash it to the latest firmware 1.92.

Any guys using this X25-M G2 with the latest firmware, how does it fare?

Also, how does this intel ssd work with intel PM965 chipset?

Thanks for all advice.

Hi, I am using the Intel 320 120G on an older firmware (pre June 2011). It hangs my computer (Asrock Extreme 4, Z68 Intel chipset) and gives me BSOD once a while doing light stuff (like once a day hang?).

Is it related to the firmware?

TIA

I did, I just bought a Crucial M4 64GB on Wednesday and updated from 0002 to 0009, typing on my laptop with the M4 inside now as we speak. No issues so far. The update was easy to do as well.

Can I ask if flashing the firmware voids any warranty with the distro or the manufacturer?

Thank you.
