I did, I just bought a Crucial M4 64GB on Wednesday and updated from 0002 to 0009, typing on my laptop with the M4 inside now as we speak. No issues so far. The update was easy to do as well.

i see.. cuz i was reading around crucial forums. some people had cold boot issues with the new fw.. not sure if its just the minority or what... should i flash it or not? any noticeable speed increase in normal usage?

Can I ask if flashing the firmware voids any warranty with the distro or the manufacturer?

Thank you.

No, the firmware is released by manufacturers to address certain issues that may be inherent in previous versions. Of course, having said that, any form of firmware upgrade can be risky and may result in data loss, so the main concern would be your data. Always backup before you do a firmware upgrade.

Mine was brand new, out of the box with no data on it. So I flashed it before doing anything on the drive. I guess those facing issues are probably already using the drives prior to the upgrade? I'm not sure if doing a clean install would make any difference.

As for speed increase, as mentioned, I haven't used the drive prior to the firmware upgrade, so I can't make any comparisons.

my laptop is running on PM 965 chipset - Sata II interface.

Wanted to get the X25-M G2 160GB and flash it to the latest firmware 1.92.

Any guys using this X25-M G2 with the latest firmware, how does it fare?

Also, how does this intel ssd work with intel PM965 chipset?

Thanks for all advice.

The 1.92 you're referring to is the version of the firmware updater tool, which is applicable for all 3 generations of the Intel SSD (not including the 510 series).

The current firmware for X25M G2 is 02M3, it's been out for a while now. It increased sequential write rates to 100Mbps (from 80 previously) for the 160gig models - I've been using this firmware for a while now, and it's rock-solid as is the case with all Intel SSDs I've used so far (1 Gen1, 2 Gen2, 2 Gen3).

While I use my Gen1 SSD on my Thinkpad T61 (which has the same PM965 chipset as your laptop), these 2 SSDs are essentially very similar, with some added features (such as TRIM enabled) on the Gen 2. I'm really very sure that you'll have no issues with any Intel, they're designed to WORK (and not set benchmark records, then fail 2 weeks later like some other SSDs), so purchase and use with confidence!

Should You Upgrade? From A Hard Drive To An SSD

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-upgrade-hdd-performance,3023.html

An SSD Eliminates System Delays

We have to admit that this is a blatant and perhaps provocative call to enthusiasts who haven't yet touched solid-state storage: don't deny yourself the advantages of an SSD the next time you upgrade your PC. Although the benefits are hard to quantify in some of the benchmarks we run (the System Builder Marathon is a perfect example, and if you haven't yet entered to win this quarter's trio of systems, make sure you do), an SSD offers so many obvious advantages, even to average users, that this call to action seems justifed.

We conducted this comparison with one of the largest, fastest and most expensive hard disks, Seagate's Barracuda XT 3 TB, and a similarly priced SSD drive from Samsung, the 470. By no means is that the fastest SSD you can buy, but our emphasis here is getting solid-state technology into your machine, period. Enthusiasts will probably go with something different. But at the end of the day, the message is the same.

At the same time, we have no interest in seeing hard drives disappear. To the contrary, when it comes to storing lots of data, be it in the form of movies, music, images, or documents, mechanical storage is still the only way to fly. With very few exceptions, an ideal PC nowadays consists of a SSD as the system drive and a hard disk for storing user information that isn't needed all of the time. A system without an SSD should really be relegated to the low end of the spectrum, while a machine with only solid-state storage is either going to run out of room quickly or cost an arm and a leg.

So INTEL still not safe to buy? Will we able to find a batch of M4 with the latest firmware in Sim Lim or we still have to upgrade ourselves?

Is it a must to upgrade to the latest firmware for M4 or INTEL SSD?

Thanks, sorry for the newbie questions, still very new to the SSD technology :)

stick with m4 betters :o
