Hi guys,

I have accidentally stripped a screw which secures the Airport/Bluetooth board while attempting to replace my Optical Drive to a Secondary HDD/SSD Drive.

Followed this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Unibody+Early+2011+Dual+Hard+Drive/8519 (See Step 8)

Despite being VERY careful, I have stripped the right screw (circled in Orange). Anyone have any suggestion on how I can remove the stripped screw?

Also, can anyone advice where I can buy the replacement of the screw in Singapore?

As per iFixit comments and Apple Service Menu, the part no. is 922-8974 at PBParts.com.

It's M1.6x0.35mmx3.5mm, D3.5 H0.5 and looks like this:

TIA!

Use a left hand drill bit and reverse the screw out with a small low torque drill.
The left hand bit will bite into the screw on reverse rotation, don't use a right hand bit.

Not sure if u can get M1.6 at hardware store, it's standard ISO size but not common. A pc repair store should have them. But i suggest ebay, buying a bulk of 50 there is cheaper than going to those chao ah beng stores.

Oh, if you can't find a left drill bit, here are some alternatives:

Carefully cut a slot into the screw head with a tungsten carbide scorer or a dremel with cobalt cutting bit.
Then screw out with a flat head screwdriver.

Drill 2 very small holes into the screw head, stick tweezers in and turn.
Must use cobalt bit, screws are usually hardened metal.
Be careful with vibration and heat generated.

Buy a left hand bit from ebay at same time as the screws. Best solution.

Try using the stapler butt to twist out
Otherwise you have to try other destructive method

Hi all,

I have purchased a Screw Extractor Set (reverse rotation) and the M1.6 3.5mm screw on Taobao. Waiting for it to be shipped back to Singapore! :(

Will update on the progress. Thanks all for the advice! :)

Just checking, why don't you just bring down for us to check out? Most of the time, we do not charge for removing screws.... :)

Stripped screws are a pain. :(
One such way is to use a bigger bit of the same head to get it out partially then gripped and unscrew with pliers

+replace screw

Just an update: 1st Feb 2016

Managed to get the screw out after an hour or so using a Cordless Drill with a variety of screw bits. Guess it takes abit of luck and patience! :)

P.S: The seller dispatched the wrong Screw Extractor set! But I managed to get the correct screw to replace it.

Thanks all for the guidance! :)
