Hi fellow singaporeans! I'm turning 23 this year and graduated from temasek polytechnic with a diploma in aerospace engineering(gpa 3.2). I have applied to SIT but unfortunately i was not successful. However, i managed to get offered a part time Aerospace systems programme at SUSS. So i am in a dilemma on what is the better option for me to take.
1) Find a full-time job related to my studies, which will take an average of 5 years to complete
2) Take a gap year and then apply to SIT next year
3) Take up a private degree @ Kaplan and the course is will be taking is completely different from what i studied in TP, which is software engineering because i am interested in the course but have zero knowledge about it.

I would really appreciate any feedback and advice that you kind people are willing to provide.

Cheers,:s13:

If you intend to stay in your field, stick with SUSS as it is more recognised compared to Kaplan.

If you do not wish to stay in your field, venture out lor. No harm getting something unrelated as long as the new degree has job opportunities that you are happy with in the future.

In my opinion, i think u can try forget about option 3 because private degrees normally will lead u to nowhere unless if u have strong connections. And u said u got no interest in the course so why waste the money to study for something u got no interest in. Mind u, private universities are super expensive, u might take at least 5 years to repay back your loan.

Option 2 is actually good but abit risky. U said u wanted to wait until next year and apply to SIT again but doesn't mean u will get accepted. Mind u, next year intake will be much more competitive and the GPA entry requirement could be set higher so u might not stand a chance at with your current GPA. Furthermore SIT is already a popular university as it has lots of connections with industries partners, hence many poly diploma holders with near perfect GPAs would want to enrol, so the only choice u have now with your current GPA, is to just pray hard and hope for the best.

And talk about best, the best for u now is Option 1. Doesnt matter if it takes u 5 years to complete the degree course, because in that 5 years u will already accumulated alot of working experience. Furthermore SUSS is now recognized as local university, and the aerospace system course in SUSS is quite establish overseas and u will have the chance to study at embry-riddle and also intern in their aerospace company. So for now at this current state, this could be your best option, the number 1 choice.

basically suss is like rank "last" among all the 6 local unis imo but its one level higher than the "best" private uni singapore. Thus, its in between
a local uni and a private uni and i would say its good enough....Furthermore, working experience will add on to it. After that, in general i would see the person having no issues in finding jobs ..

Define better? If you understand your judgement criteria easier for I to decide. If better is easy to study and make lot of money EDMW will show you how to get to that unrealistic goal.

How did you come about option 3?

If you choose private one, make sure you see UNIVERSITY on their logo. Gov has been strict on this matter, only Universities can have it in their logo. Higher learning institute or learning centers cannot use the word UNIVERSITY on their logo and names.

Which university don't have logo?

Organization like Raffles Education Corporation Ltd set up their HQ in Singapore and name their private school in Singapore as Raffles College of Higher Education. Their branch in Malaysia is call Raffles University Iskandar ( http://www.raffles-university.edu.my/index.php/features/our-programmes ) and they offered their own degree like Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours).

If base on your advice, it should be recognized by Singapore for civil service jobs. However it is not and this is the reason why as share by one of the ministry in Singapore.

https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/po...post-secondary-education#listofaccreditedunis

1. Does the Ministry of Education have a list of accredited overseas universities? How do we find out if the degree qualifications awarded by these universities are recognised in Singapore?

The Ministry of Education does not have a list of accredited overseas universities. There is also no central authority in Singapore that assesses or grants recognition for degrees obtained from overseas universities. The reason is that the employer should be the one deciding whether a degree-holder has the qualities desired for the job and the qualification most relevant to his needs. The employer is in the best position to decide how much value he will assign to a person’s qualification.

However, in selecting an overseas institution for undergraduate degree studies, it is advisable that students establish whether the institution is a bona fide educational establishment. Such enquiries may be made at the Embassy/High Commission of the country where the university is located.

Professional degrees such as those in engineering, medicine, law, and accountancy should be those recognised by the respective professional bodies. For example, a person with an engineering degree from an overseas university who intends to seek registration as a professional engineer in Singapore will have to check whether the institution that awards the qualification is recognised by the Professional Engineers Board.

In the case of overseas universities offering courses here through local agents, the institutions concerned and their agents are responsible for all aspects of the programmes. It is advisable for students interested in enrolling for such courses to find out as much as possible about the programmes from the institutions or agents, before enrolling in them.

If you need information on acceptance of overseas universities for employment in the Civil Service, please read the FAQs available on the Careers@Gov portal.

If you choose private one, make sure you see UNIVERSITY on their logo. Gov has been strict on this matter, only Universities can have it in their logo. Higher learning institute or learning centers cannot use the word UNIVERSITY on their logo and names.
