Hi, I'm a Malaysian currently doing my Diploma.

I was recommended to study in Kaplan Uni cause its impossible to get into local uni in SG with a private diploma.

Just wanted to know about the Comm degree from Murdoch, is it recognized in SG? And as for future employment would employees hire graduates from Kaplan or just throw them aside? or would it be based on how you show up as well as previous working experiences etc? I'm asking about the communication sector of course :)

Also, can anyone tell me more about Kaplan? like if its a good reputable uni?

Thank you in advance :D

Kaplan is a distance learning provider. Cannot comment on teaching standards but Kaplan itself is very reputable. At least it will not close down like some other smaller providers

There's no Kaplan uni. Kaplan partners with various unis to offer Distance Learning degrees.

Recognizability is such a contentious issue. As a rule of thumb, private sector employers have no problem with recognition of DL degree. Years after graduation, your experience will matter more than what degree u have.

I suppose ur doing a poly diploma? Don't limit ur options to Kaplan only. Explore other institutions such as SIM, PSB, MDIS etc...

Cheers

Hi Shermainelah,

Kaplan itself is a reputable school which provides many types of course. The schedule itself is kind of flexible, especially delicate to working adults in Singapore.
May I know which degree you are looking at? and currently working or not?

If possible, do explore for more universities, don't limit yourself to one.

There's no Kaplan uni. Kaplan partners with various unis to offer Distance Learning degrees.

Kaplan is a Private Education Institution (PEI) that offers their own diplomas. Their degrees, on the other hand, are partnered with overseas universities.

As a private degree, the Bachelor of Communication from Murdoch University is well recognised in the private sector. There are many professionals in the public relations or corporate communication fields that graduated from Murdoch University.

However, as it is a private degree, it is not that easy to gain employment in the civil service.

Having a degree is not the sole requirement for employment. It merely helps you to gain the required expertise to carry out your job, as well as creating opportunities. Your performance during the interview, as well as your previous work experiences still play a part in securing a job. In the communications sector, writing is a fundamental skill. You may be asked to undergo a writing test to determine your writing capability.

Do take note that Kaplan is not the only PEI that offers degrees from Murdoch University. SMF Institute of Higher Learning is also offering courses from Murdoch University, including the Journalism major. Kaplan does not offer Journalism as part of its Communication course.

Hope it helps.
Cheers!

thanks for your help.

Im actually quite undecided cause I have friends in SG who told me that Kaplan is not that good, cause they offer express degrees (explains the shorter period of time) and the other option I have is SIMGE.

I wouldn't be interested in just focusing on Journalism , but media studies / communication as a whole. But, is SIMGE a good/reputable uni to be in? As in will it be recognized?

thanks

With PHEI, it is a miss and hit when it comes to lecturers. There will inevitable some who sees teaching simply as a job. Personally I scrape thru a module with self teaching.

You need to understand the academic structure to know why it is a "express degree". It is not a bad degree cos it is fast.

first of all, you need a diploma for admission. Your dip credits will exempt you from first year. In sg, murdoch curriculum is based over 3 trimester (4-month term). While in Aus, one academic year is two term of 6 month. You need two term to cover one year of curriculum.

Most murdoch deg are 3 years, taking away the first year exemption, you will be left with two. If you do your deg in Aus, you will need absolute two years (2 yr x 2 sem x 6 mths term = 24 months).

In sg, due to the shorter terms, you can finish in 16 months. (2 yrs x 2 sem x 4 months = 16 mths). This is done by taking away the 2 months break in between terms which Aus students enjoy, which I think is a waste of time as an adult learner.

As I've mentioned, lecturers are miss and hit, so do be prepared to go the extra mile to secure good grades. The pace will take some time to get used to, but once you are familiar with the murdoch system, you are good to go on your own.

Simge are on par with Kaplan since both are pte edu providers. And imo, you are better off going to nus/ntu since their courses are way expensive tho they have uni with better reputation. But a pte deg nonetheless. (Unless you are referring to unisim, who confers their own degrees.)

Hi Friend,

I like to share my humble views on Education. I am a local drop out from NTU due to poor health and with poor family financial background and finally i am ready to going for my degree again (much older now) but this time round at Kaplan.

No one can give you the best advice except yourself. There are people pursuing education for knowledge so they study long course and learn many subject but left with lesser time to apply or probably don't need to apply but that is what they wanted. I have a colleague doing 3 years part-time degree courses and end up spending time into the 4th years now. Can you imagine all the opportunities he would have seize if he were to get his degree earlier. The world is changing every day, chances come and go, standard of living keep rising, by the time he got his degree, he'll be too late to react on the rest.

Some people just want to get enhance cert so they choose short courses. Today context, time is of the essential.

Life is a journey so doesn't mean you get a good local degree you can stop there and by getting a short part-time degree, you'll go nowhere. It what you want in life, your capability and character the way i see it. Those will define where you will end up.

Everyone wants to be a big fish in a big pond but if you are not the top brain-er, you still have a choice of been a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond. The glass is half filled or half full is all up to your mind.

If you live till 80, you actually only have 29200 days to do something. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all. Just don't spend to much time considering. To be in the lead is to be the first to take the first step out because that will put the rest behind and the best way to predict your future is to create it. Carpe Diem!

Hi friend,

Anyone need Kaplan referral, PM. I got the cheque under may referral name after two months upon staring the course. I can whatapps you the prove and I'll be with Kaplan till end of 2016.

Advice to those still considering due to whatever recognition question or which courses/schools are better, bottom line is; doing something to upgrade yourself is always better than doing nothing.

Its not about ang moh or not lei, its the teaching standards just not quite there. I personally felt that the lecturer wants to rush through everything and get things over and done with asap.

Though it might be different for different lecturer. Though if you want to do professional qualification, I'd say save your money and self-study!
