Hi.

I have been checking online for the items to prepare for enlistment, but
most lists are for BMT, while I'm starting PTP next saturday.

I am aware that there are some differences between BMT and PTP
eg PTP no field duties, more admin time..

So i would like to seek advice on whether this list of complied items is
sufficient for PTP / what else is needed..

1) cheap watch
2) alarm clock with spare batteries
3) washing powder
4) toiletries
(liquid soap, battery operated shaver, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial
foam...)
5) enough underwear for 2 weeks
6) swimming googles (trunks provided)
7) nail clipper
8) slippers (?)
9) specs (black plastic/metal) + spare pair
10) at least 7 clothes hangers of the same colour and pegs
11) permanent ink black marker (for admin purposes)
12) ziploc bag (5 each of small and medium and large sizes)
(not sure if need so many...)
13) black tape x3
14) clear tape
15) small key lock ( < 8mm?)
16) coins ($10 in value or more)
17) febreeze (alternative to washing powder/ complement)
18) thirsty hippo ( to remove smell from locker)
19) basic first aid kit
20) extra plastic bags for dirty laundry
21) black pen (admin)
22) rags (area cleaning)
23) spare battery for phone
24) prickly heat powder

Also, is it advisable to wash dirty laundry in camp or at home?

Thanks!

The difference between BMT and PTP is extremely blurred. They don't exactly segregate their activities until so clearly whereby what is supposed to be done in BMT will be done in BMT. It's more like for those going enhanced BMT, their activity will be extremely packed while for PTP it's more spread out. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys go for fieldcamp the very week the enhanced people enlist because you have done what you need to know 8 weeks earlier...

This is a good site to go... http://iprep.ns.sg/

This is what you will get... http://iprep.ns.sg/collecting-your-equipment.html

14)Don't see the need
15)Why bring keylock? FOr cabinent? They will issue u code lock. Depends on company policy whether if it's compulsory to use it. but code lock better than key lock cause lose key gg....

18)Good choice
19)Not necessary. jsut report sick la
20)can
21)1 pen is issued, ok to bring another 1 la...

I dun trust my washing skills, so even if i washed it in camp, i will still bring it home...

I understand. Will go read up on the website.
(I can't quote links, so i removed them)

Guess I can reduce/ forgo the ziplocs bags altogether, as well as the clear tape and pen and basic kit.

I read somewhere that its good to bring another keylock (forgot where)..
Honestly speaking, I prefer codelock too but the same source said codelock isn't allowed and you have to pass 1 spare key to your buddy when you're not around (hence the keylock..)
But perhaps things have changed, so the keylock provided is sufficient
and it's optional to bring another lock.

1) cheap watch - yes you need it as an alarm clock as you cannot charge ur handphone, so a cheap watch is necessary. keep those g-shock at home and wear it when u get posted to unit.
2) alarm clock with spare batteries - dun need la. your bunk mates will switch on the lights and that is a good alarm already.
3) washing powder - yes, cos 5 sets of uniforms might not be enough. Otherwise, u can borrow from ur bunk mates and bring them in after ur first book in.
4) toiletries - obviously!! (liquid soap, battery operated shaver, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial foam...)
5) enough underwear for 2 weeks - yes. pls bring lots of it!! cos the first 2 weeks is confinement. Furthermore, you need to pack some underwear in ur field pack which u wun have access to it, cos most pple will not take out the items in the field pack unless in emergency. haha.
6) swimming googles (trunks provided) - trunks is provided, but goggles are used in swimming lessons. If you are a swimmer, then u just need to go for the swim test and no more swimming lessons. If you cant swim, then u dun even need a goggle cos the swimming lessons are splashing water, so gu niang.
7) nail clipper - dun need.
8) slippers - you can wear the sandals that is issued for bathing and going toilets.
9) specs (black plastic/metal) + spare pair - yes, black plastic type is the best, with spectacle hooks! dun need spare.
10) at least 7 clothes hangers of the same colour and pegs - yes. you need to hang 1/2 set of uniform in the cupboard for standby (inspections), and during ur laundry, you want to hang outside so that it is easier to dry. remember to put some marks on your pegs so that u dun lose it.
11) permanent ink black marker (for admin purposes) - hmm, its $1 only, so just buy, u need to label ur water bottles, LPV, field pack. This one can share if you wanna save $$.
12) ziploc bag (5 each of small and medium and large sizes) - this is very important. you need alot of these. firstly, you need for the standard items in your field pack. secondly, you can keep ur soiled clothes to bring back for washing. you dun wan to stink the mrt or buses ar. hahahaa.
13) black tape x3 - yup, you can buy one whole roll, like 10. you need alot of them.
14) clear tape - dun need to buy, this can share. this is for water-proofing ur standard items in your field pack.
15) small key lock ( < 8mm?) - the small type of lock to lock ur cupboard, otherwise u can use the lock given (numerical type) to locl ur cupboard. if you are buying those key locks, remmeber to have more than 2 keys, cos u need to give ur buddy one key.
16) coins ($10 in value or more) - subjective. enough money to take a cab home. remember to bring lots of coins for vending machine!!
17) febreeze (alternative to washing powder/ complement) - can share, dun waste money.
18) thirsty hippo ( to remove smell from locker) - dun really need.
19) basic first aid kit - there are medics in the camp, so save the money.
20) extra plastic bags for dirty laundry - yes, but ziplocks can do the job better.
21) black pen (admin) - they will give u writing materials as a welcome gift.
22) rags (area cleaning) - yes. please bring!!
23) spare battery for phone - if you have, cos tekong cannot charge handphone.
24) prickly heat powder - yes, its quite important when u go 7days outfield. cos u cant bathe, so u powder bathe.

Please don't use number padlocks or "turn-knob" locks as your buddy is supposed to hold one of your keys, lest you are not around and the instructors request access to your metal cabinet. Keep your keys with you, recommend that you put with your ID tags

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but field pack is the stuff that you pack when you go outfield right?
If my outfield isn't in the first 2 weeks of confinement, then I can reduce the number of ziploc bags?
Or is there even a need since 15 bags are already provided?

And when you say 5 sets of uniform may not be enough, so would it be advisable to buy more? If so, how many?
Similarly, should I buy more admin and PT shirt? If so, how many?
I asked around and got mixed responses..

Thanks.

Oh i see..
The reason I asked about the washing is that I heard it's time consuming to wash during admin time/before/after bath,
so I was wondering if buying more sets would be more convenient.

Lol true.
I was thinking along the line of if you have more clean sets to spare,
then can put off washing until bookout.

they will ask you to pack the standard items in the first 2 weeks for inspections. cos in the first few weeks, you will go route march with ur LPV, followed by ur fieldpack (with the standard items inside as the weight). Bring more ziplock bags will die meh? you can supply to your buddy and dun need to stock up during ur next book out wat.

dun need to buy more than the issued uniforms, cos 5 sets is enough if normal training days. Its only during field camp that you feel that its isnt enough, I would recommend you to bring 4 sets for field camp and keep one set in the cupboard for book out. Also, keep one nice set for ur POP, cos that should be the smartest smart4.

ur PS/PC will bring you to eMart on the first 2 weeks to stock up the admin and PT shirts. Mindef is very kind to credit you about $250 as credits for u to spend.

it doesnt take too long to wash the admin/PT tops. u can wash after lunch cos they usually give about 45mins-1hr rest before the next lesson, so u can go wash and sun it during the hottest time of the day. usually, my clothes will be dry by the time i return to bunk in the evening.

as for the army uniform, its difficult to wash, so i usually dont wash unless its really soiled after route march or for some field exercises.
