I want to raise awareness about Subway Singapore’s unethical treatment of young part-timers. My 14-year-old child applied for an employment advertisement posted by Subway on Fastjobs hiring part-time crew at $10.50/hour.
He was assigned for 3 days of work on 14th, 15th and 16th February 2025 from 5:00pm to 10:45pm respectively and worked diligently for 2 days, learning tasks and handling closing duties. Early for both days of work on 14th and 15th, he was hands on learning how to make sandwiches, tasked to do closing which includes sweeping, mopping, washing containers, and wiping glass surfaces.
On 16th February at 1pm, the manager suddenly dropped a whatsapp message to inform that he did not pass training so there's no need to attend work anymore.
Subway also refused to pay, claiming it was “training” and that because the training didn't pass, there would be no payment. No contract was provided. My son ended working 2 days for nothing.
My son had to ask me for help since he didn't know what to do. Only after we escalated to MOM did Subway offer payment—if my child worked another shift!
This is blatant exploitation of minors unaware of their rights.
Parents, be cautious! Companies must not cheat young workers out of their hard-earned wages. Subway should know better than to target young workers or low entry workers unaware of their work rights.
