I think 4K monitors have its merits, but you're right in that if HDR contents don't make up most of the monitor's usage, no point getting this specifically.In my opinion, if you don’t care about HDR, then really no need to spend this sort of money. A good IPS monitor is likely half the cost. For productivity, I would still recommend an ultra wide 1440p monitor as it gives you more screen estate for 2 applications/ documents side by side.
When using an external monitor together with a laptop, you can keep the 100% scaling on your laptop, while maintaining a different scaling on this monitor. For me, it will be 150%. No way I can see anything on 100% scaling because it will be too small.
I also want to use 150% scaling, but outlook doesn't play well (it looks blurry when shifting the window from one screen to another.
