Surface Pro/Return Policies?

Hi! I actually had a really quick question but I had no idea where to post it, but it is kind of about a tablet. (in retrospect many would argue it isn't a tablet so I might just be in the wrong place)

I'm actually looking into buying a Surface Pro (along with Type Cover and the Bamboo pen) with the purpose of using it as a pseudo-Cintiq with laptop capabilities for some lightweight gaming.

I'm an animation student that definitely will have to use applications like Photoshop CS5/6, Microsoft Office, some After Effects/Premiere and very basic Maya functions like animating.

Does anyone with a Surface Pro happen to know if it's good for those things? Especially for drawing/animating?

Also; what was actually my initial question, is there a store in Singapore where I can buy a product and test it out for awhile and return it if it doesn't suit my needs like in the US?

Thank you for any replies!

edit: on a side note, is anyone able to explain why the Surface Pro and Cintiq 13"HD - both 999USD - have such drastically different price tags in Singapore with the Surface at $1328 and the Cintiq at $1700?

Chill out man, I was just asking. It's a perfectly normal policy that many, many stores in the US have.

Most electronic retailer etc Challenger or Harven Norman should have display sets available for you to try out. No return policy in Singapore I'm afraid. In fact, buyer's rights were pretty much ignored by the government in the past.

happy user of a surface pro.

I use it not to your extent; just photoshop and typical office style use (emails, calendars (OOT: quite upset by google))

I think it should suit your light animation requirements, but i severely doubt it able to withstand your heavier needs. It is, afterall, just an ultrabook-level processor. the stylus works divine though, like how it's advertised / supposed to.

I am not sure if Bamboo pen will work with Surface... but the only one I've tried is Galaxy Note's (just no pressure sensitive). I think you should try it at Challanger outlet first.. The default pen that ships with Surface just works great for me. (eraser, right click, pressure, drawing, etc) For simple photoshop sketching ;)

However, you do need some time to get used to it.. its slightly different from drawing on the actual Bamboo board, since its a glass surface. Overall it gets the job done too.

No... I don't think there's ever such return policy in Singapore :( Our government is always pro-business... since when they care about consumer :s11:

- Not sure-

Answers to your questions:

1. Bamboo pen (or any of Wacom's pens for drawing products) will NOT work with the Surface Pro's digitized screen (or any other Wacom-technology based tablet screen). They are not the same and will not work together. The Surface Pen that comes with the Pro does a good job though, although the screen + pen texture may be a bit too slick for your needs.

2. Photoshop, works OK but slowly when doing processing. Animation and CAD is really stretching the Intel HD 4000 graphics and won't be a pleasant experience. Light gaming is definitely OK, don't expect the AAA games to run at superb graphics.

3. Local prices are always managed by their importing agency... in this case Microsoft Singapore is helping you out.

Cintiq 13HD

That was the reason why I imported my Cintiq 13HD
directly from Amazon Japan. Together with shipping
and GST, I paid about S$1,300 only.

The only thing is there is no warranty.

Yeah.. I went to a store today, tried out the Surface Pro for a good while and though they didn't have a stylus pen to test, it seems unlikely it'll be able to serve my needs. Which is unfortunate! Because if I just needed a powerful tablet-computer, I'd totally get one.

Oh, can you do that? I'm going to give that a shot. Been trying to find a way to get a Cintiq for a reasonable price too, but otherwise the cheapest I found was some.. Australia retailer for 1.5k.

(First, I apologise for going off-topic
since this thread is about the Surface Pro.)

In my opinion, it is better to get a
Cintiq so you are not stuck with the
same hardware for years.

I got mine from Amazon Japan during a
very short window period when it was
available (90,718 JPY).

Now the stock has run out.
But it doesn't hurt to keep checking
the page everyday.

I liked my Cintiq 13HD so much...
that I sold it to my colleague.

After using it, I *MUST* have
the grand daddy of all Cintiqs:
the 24HD Touch!

The annoying thing is the cost:
US - S$4,680 (excluding shipping)
JAPAN - S$3,535 (excluding shipping)
HK - S$4,870 (excluding shipping)
SINGAPORE - S$6,139

And to make it worse:
HK - 3 years warranty
Europe - 3 years warranty
US - 2 years warranty
SINGAPORE - 1 year warranty

So, not only do we pay the most,
we also get the least in warranty.

I ordered my Cintiq 24HD Touch from
Amazon Japan, but had to return it
because vPost refused to ship to
Singapore due to the weight.

Now I have no choice but to buy local.
