Surge protector reccomendations

Any trusted brand I should go for?
Was looking at Schneider/Targus for higher price options and Masterplug/Daiyo for lower price options. Are these brands good?

My belkin one giving me weird issues not sure whether its the surge protector or the house wiring. Can hear popping noises when the lights in the kitchen go off/turning fan speed (plugged into the belkin) through my headphones (plugged into audio interface), sometimes hear electrical humming/buzzing coming from either mic or audio interface through headphones as well and i keep getting zapped when charging my phone (wire plugged into belkin) LOOOOL

All surge protector products generally do at least something. That something may be as little as just having one single MOV but that's still something. Differences between brands may include how much value you get out of each product. Schneider and Masterplug products do appear frequently in commercial settings, but don't rule out other brands just yet if they provide the same thing at similar price.

There are people who teardown the products to show what's inside. This is Belkin Surgecube for example:


Next is the rated spec of the product... Masterplug SRGAUSBPB2 is rated for 185 Joules, Belkin Surgecube is 306 joules... etc

What you need is not surge protector:

- Can hear popping noises when the lights in the kitchen go off/turning fan speed
You need line filter (also called line conditioner or power conditioner), and often they still don't fix the problem. Instead, better grounding arrangement can help.

This is just the common "floated secondary problem", either change your equipment or change the way you connect your equipment, this phenomenon is normal and legal btw.

Hey! Honestly not too sure. Haven't tested other surge protectors or extension cord to see if it still happens. Also not sure what a trail socket is but I'm using this surge protector from belkin (image attached below)

I apologise for asking you to basically dumb it down for me. Not very educated on this front and rather not accidentally mess something up

This is a 8 ways trails sockets, not a wise choice. To find out weather your issues due to house wiring or the 8 ways trail sockets, remove items that plug into the trails sockets and plug then to a wall socket and take note if there is still issues you mentioned. You should be able to figure out the rest else post your findings.

Your Belkin is okay for what it is. Has a bit of line filtering.



Change your grounding arrangement / change the way you connect your equipment
Ideally your group of equipment should be electrically as close as possible. Put them on the same extension strip, don't put them on different wall sockets
If you have a line filter, put your equipment all on the same side of the filter, don't put some behind the filter and some outside of the filter. This ensures they have the same voltage.
Identify which of your equipment are grounded and which are not grounded. Connecting an ungrounded equipment to a grounded equipment will ground the grounded equipment through the connection, but that also causes the surge voltage to appear on the signal, so experiment.

Change your equipment
Some equipment or some combination of equipment just happen to be more susceptible to noise. Remove the connections between your equipment to see which connection is causing the noise. Change it if possible e.g. laptops / mini PC can be changed to full size PC, analog audio connection can be changed to optical connection etc.

Sadly I have 8 things I need to plug in HAHAH. No choice here as it's all for work. I'll try what you suggested when I have the time althought I'm not sure if anything would happen as most of these issues occur with my audio interface which requires the PC to be plugged in and on as well.

I'll see if I can figure out a way to test the socket individually though. Again appreciate the help!

Hi! I like to have advise, your suggestion is to put group of equipment on same extension instead of different wall sockets, which was what I did before rewiring whole house. I did that cos lack of sockets and bought Belkin 6 way surge protector extension cos previously, my D-link router ( used normal extension strips) being fried due to lightning surge. ever since my equipment were fine

During rewiring the whole house, as my electrician suggested better to have separate sockets for every equipment, so I did. but in recent bad weather, 2 of my equipment kena fried, at different rooms.
Does it means putting equipment in different sockets is more dangerous to electrical surge than in extension strips?

I am confused.

Enthusiasts have unique answers for unique situations

Putting equipment electrically next to each other reduces voltage that can appear between them. And you can put all behind a single surge protector.

If you put one equipment behind surge protector and one without surge protector on different wall socket, and then connect both equipment together, this will worsen the surge protection of one or both equipment.
