I have mounted my surround (rear) speakers on the wall. My sofa is positioned in front of this wall. The rear speakers are mounted on nails, not brackets, hence they are not angled towards the listener. They are right below the ceiling.

I am wondering if such set-up would really affect the surround experience. I only read about the optimal set-up, i.e 2 ft above listener, at an angle towards listener, after I have installed the speakers.

Change to brackets that allows u to angle the speakers towards the listening position.

What cables should be used to connect the speakers to the AV receivers? Any types? Or there is a special type?

Standard speaker cable will do.
Depending on where you seat and the height of the speaker.
You may want to buy a titled angled speaker mount.

Can get from Home fix.
Alternate can ask installer to help you take a look for
optimum sound experience.

Thanks all.

After reading all your comments and the recommendations online, I may decide to either buy a speaker stand or wall mount it.

If I choose to wall mount (which I already have), I may lower it to the recommended position of 2ft above listener. But the wires can be seen running on my back wall.

Techidiot, u mean if I purchased a tilted angle mount, I do not have to lower my speakers to the recommended height?

If I were to purchase a speaker stand, are there any recommendations? My speakers are from Yamaha, do I have to get a Yamaha stand?

Speaker stand not necessary need to be branded
any brand will do the job.
The only thing is you have to determine which
gives you a more comfortable surround experience.

My rear speaker is done by a audio installer, how they do it.
Is they mount it quite high but with titled angle pointed downwards
at the person.

I quite like how they setup since it gives that surround feeling.
Need not worry about long cables since they give some ample
distance from the ceiling to the speaker so it don't look that ugly.

No harm call them and ask what is their recommendation
for your room.

My surround speakers are mounted very high and tilted downwards.
Not the recommended mounting height but I compromise that for the overall look.

Ok thanks for sharing. My surround speakers are also below the ceiling, juz not tilted. I wonder how much of a difference when the speakers angled towards the listener or facing upfront
