Anyone knows for far is the airport to George Street and estimated how much by taxi? What is the best itinerary to take a look around the area from 8am-3pm around the area on a weekday?

For Saturday have the morning till 1pm free. Any interesting weekend markets that's nearby?

Many thanks in advance!

George Street is fairly long. I presume you're referring to somewhere around Chinatown. A very rough estimate is $40-50 cab fare. Distance from airport probably abt 10km.

There's paddy's market in Chinatown. Unless you have car and can head out west toward homebush, paddy's is your best bet.

Booking a tour is hassle-free, of course. But there is a cost implication. Especially if your own group size is 3 or 4 persons, the cost can multiply and become quite painful. Often the tour companies list 7 or 8 locations for a day tour, making it seem value for money. But you will end up spending very little time at each location.

In my opinion, it would be best to do your research and plan your own itinerary, taking into account that some places may be inconvenient without private transport. Plenty of information to be found online, and if you have some specific questions I'll try to help. Don't expect me to provide tour agency service, of course.

You can just grab the train down to Sydney from the airport quite fast and cheap too unless you are sharing the cab with 3 other people. Taxi you are looking at around 50aud plus any additional bridge toll fees.

George Street is just around the corner once you exit the central station.

You can head towards the direction of darling harbor and see some sights along the way.

What places of interest are you looking at? Maybe you can name a few so that we can advise you.

Yup that sounds like a good idea. Take a look at the official tourism website for Sydney and NSW, and also some of those travel bloggers who take lots of photos of their trips. Can be useful in your preparation.

Hi Avizoa

Hmm ....
Sydney harbour
Blue mountain
Port stephen

Sydney harbour easily accesible from the metro stations so don't worry about it. What I did the last time round was took the metro to millis point station and walk across the sydney harbor bridge to head towards the sydney harbour area. This walk although long was quite scenic at night. You can even catch a glimpse of luna park at night when it is closed. I went quite late at night but rest assured that it is safe as there are police patrols in the area and even on the bridge.

As for blue mountain, I book a day tour from my hostel. It was quite cheap at that time as I compared it to renting a car for a day and it was around the same pricing.

Yes, you are right. I paid $37. didn't had much time to head out of the area so I visited paddy's.. nothing much to buy except for some nuts-by-weight stalls and lots of hp casing and souvenirs stalls :o

if travelling in a group and not driving then take cab better. the aiport train to city is a ripoff at $15 per pax. taxi only $40-50.

I would say it's quite a close call.
If 4 persons travelling together without too much luggage (i.e. large suitcases), then taking a cab would be a good idea.
But if it's 3 persons and it's peak hour (heavy traffic), then train might still be cheaper and faster.

$15 for the train ticket is expensive... mainly for the 'airport access fee' or whatever they call it.

Are there any cheaper options for train beside the 15/pax? Travelling in two only

Look for bus 400. I know it stops at the Qantas domestic terminal, but someone will have to update as to where the stop is for the international terminal. It links Bondi Junction and Burwood, but mostly speaking, you'll either get the Bondi Junction bus for a few stops, it's about 5 mins walk from Mascot station, or you get the Burwood bus, which first stop at a small train station with infrequent service, or get off at Rockdale which gets more trains. Both of these stations will get you into the city in about 15 minutes at a much more reasonable cost.

Also, it has been announced this week that Uber X will be made legal at Sydney airport shortly.
