Hi,

How should i go about travelling to these places. Pretty new to the HSR / TRA system. Also, need help with recommendations to do in Taichung!
Do I need to purchase any entrance tickets in advance for certain landmarks?

I intend to travel to these places.

- Taoyuan Airport to Taipei Main Station
- Taipei Main Station to Taichung
- Taichung to Taoyuan
- Sunmoon Lake
- Qingjing Farm

I believe google isnt very accurate for trains but only buses. And if im not mistaken theres a high speed railway a nd the normal metro, advice needed on taking which.

You should then read up on the difference between TRA, HSR and MRT. Google is generally accurate with the routes, AND the different types of trains. What Google recommended when I typed in "Taoyuan airport to Taipei main station" is correct, and it'll be what most regulars here will recommend too.

If your Taiwan intention is to visit sunmoon lake and cingjing farm, here's what you can do:

a. Arrive in Taoyuan Airport
b. Take a guoguang bus to Taichung
c. Take a tourist bus from Taichung to Sunmoon Lake
d. Take a tourist bus from Taichung to Cingjing farm.
e1. Return from Taichung to Taipei or
e2. Return from Taichung to Taoyuan airport


Taiwan transport network is good.

To travel within Taipei or Kaohsiung, you can rely on their metro [捷运] or buses [公车]. In Taipei you can buy a 1 day tourist passport for unlimited rides on mrt and buses at NTD180 [more information here http://taipeipass.travel.taipei/?lang=en][here's a ebook guide on where are the places on interest http://taipeipass.travel.taipei/Resources/Documents/TaipeiPass(en).pdf]. In Kaohsiung you can buy a 1 day pass for unlimited rides on mrt only at NTD150.

To travel between cities, you can rely on their trains [taiwan railway, 台铁] or high speed rails [taiwan high speed rail, 高铁] or buses[客运].

To travel between Taoyuan airport and Taipei, you can rely on their metro [桃园机场捷运]. In Taoyuan airport, you can board the metro [at NTD 180, about 30 minutes journey], and you shall alight at Taipei metro station [台北车站].

If you want to go to ximending, you can take their metro [捷运] to 西门, just a metro station away from 台北车站。

You just need to understand the different mode of transport available in Taiwan, namely
捷运[mrt],客运[long distance coach],高铁[high speed rail],台铁[rail],公车[city buses].

Travel in Taiwan is easy, and for solo traveller, a night dorm stay at Taipei at Ximending can be as low as 500NTD. If you are lucky enough it will even come you a breakfast buffet, yes even for a backpacker.
