Hi guys, i am re-picking up this childhood hobby during this ** period.

I have some questions about the wheel and tires sizes for Tamiya Mini 4WD.

There are basically 3 sizes of wheels & tires - small diameter, medium diameter (also called low profile) & large diameter.

The large diameter wheel (without tires) measures 23mm while the medium diameter (i.e. low profile) wheel without tires measure 20mm.

Small diameter wheel seems to a thing of the past where they appeared to only be used with sponge tires.

Size compatibility wise, low profile medium diameter tires can fit both medium diameter wheel (low profile wheel) as well as large diameter wheels.

Tamiya regulation says the wheel with tires diameter must be at least 22mm....which means to say so long if you use large dia wheels you already passed the regulation. If use medium dia/low-profile wheels, then the tires thickness must be at least 2mm.

Is my underatanding correct?

Guys my tamiya lap timer is not functioning. In fact the LED screen isn’t functioning clearly but can see something here and there. Anyone had any suggestions to help to rectify?

Sponge tires still can be used but not for jumps.
As when the car lands, the car will bounce off the track.

Tire diameter really depend on chassis and track.
Low profile and large diameter are for speed.

Typical comes with AR chassis, MA Chassis as well as FM-A.
These are speed chassis.

Small diameter there are two types, only those come from early days
of Mini 4wd will understand them since it was used in the past.

This type of tire found in VS and Super-X/XX are great for technical circuits.
Since the tire is small thus the car is much closer to the track.
During jump, chances of flying off is lesser as compare with low profile/large diameter.

Which is why some trim off low profile/large diameter tire to make the car closer to the track.

The other small diameter tire, where front is slim while the back is bigger.

This type of chassis are actually all rounder meaning good for speed and technical as it depends on the gear ratio used.
By default it comes with 4:1/4:2:1 which are good for acceleration while 3:1 ratio are meant for speed.

However the tire is slow in corners since the big holds back the car.
Only way to counter this is to use low profile one way wheels.

When you use one way wheel, the car will not be stuck in corner thus
making it fast in both straights and corner.
However take note one way wheel are not suitable for jumps as it
will get damaged.

This hobby have a lot to learn, tire, chassis as well as gear ratio.
I already quit this hobby so I hope this knowledge is useful.
However not all parts especially for older chassis are sold here, some
parts have to source overseas.

One important question.

If small diameter wheel-tires (23.5 -24mm) and 9mm/13mm rollers means slow speed, how come i am seeing those who use small diameter wheel-tires and 9mm/13mm rollers setup outrun those who use large diameter wheel-tires (25mm - 25.5mm) and 19mm rollers ???

Tip from me:

- Smaller diameter, lesser centrifugal force
- Bigger diameter, more centrifugal force
centrifugal force is the resistance force against rotation.

It depend on the track:

- Smaller roller 9/11/13 good for cornering suitable for technical track
- Big roller like 17, 19, cornering slow so suitable for high speed track

- Small diameter tire, good for cornering but not for high speed
- Large diameter tire, good for speed but slow cornering

So it really depend on the track, if got lots of jump, corner, tight corner and etc. use smaller roller and tire.
