Yesh, they can... you need the wheel hub rollers... and the racing high speed gears for it to run at decent speed...

There is even a sponge wheel set for these little machines as well... but that was a long time ago.. it didnt really took off..

Erm.. see the ball bearing thingy on the wheel? Thats acts like a roller..
