I recently had an opportunity to had dinner at Tan Yu Famous Grilled Fish’s 2nd Store At Westgate.
First off, is the waiting time. It was dinner time and the queue was long, messy, with several dozens of people queuing up to get a table.
They appeared to have trouble allocating seats and my group easily waited for over an hour just to get a table: from 6.50 pm to 8.05 pm.
Upon getting a table, we ordered the following items:
Limbo fish with pumpkin sauce
Man Tou with curdled milk
Barbequed Brinjo
First off, the Limbo fish cost $45. So what is Limbo fish? It actually is Basa Fish, a form of catfish and is known for being sold extremely cheap in markets. At $45, the price is……interesting…….
The fish was in a sort-of a gigantic hotplate, with pumpkin sauce everywhere, and underneath the fish, was cheap sausages, green peas and Enokitake mushrooms. Everything was being hot-plated and cooked under the fish itself and if you’re not careful, it could get overcooked and burnt.
I would agree that in terms of flesh and quantity, the fish seems to provide lots of flesh, enough for a party of four.
I do have an issue with the bones. Given that it is Basa fish, there are bones everywhere within the flesh and it can be quite easy to choke on them. I also noticed that the underside of the fish (the side that is in contact with the hotpot itself) has burnt skin.
The man tou with the curdled milk was actually quite okay but for 3 mantou, at more than $5, I found it pricey.
The barbequed brinjo was a first for me. It was soggy (being brinjo, no matter how you cook, it will be limp and soggy), and it broke into pieces when you try to lift it up. The taste was gone too.
In terms of the restaurant environment, it is very retro and trendy, neat and clean. With transformer toys, old-style TV sets and books in a layout around us.
Foodwise, it seem to taste good.
But bear in mind, anything will taste good if you have been standing in a queue for over an hour and missed your usual dinning time by over 45 minutes.
In fact, I see most guests standing there and waiting for long periods of time.
If I went back there, without queuing up and getting hungry, the taste might seem very different.
