Have anyone been to Tataka. How best to go there?

The only option I know of is by car from Alishan, about 22 km.

Any possible public transport to go there?

Yuanlin Bus will stopover at Tataka for 20 minutes. If you just want to have a look, you can try it.

Thk for your infro. I will take your lead from there.

From my understanding, there is no bus from SML to Alishan or vice versa. But i will check it up by calling them.
I'm not stopping over at Tataka. I plan to stay n do a few days of trekking in the near future. Gathering infro to do my planning.

Tataka is the entrance of Yusan. If you want to trek to Yusan, then you need to hire a cab from Shuilie or Donpu since you have to arrive Tataka in the early morning and reach Paiyun lodge before sunset.....<if you have applied the entrance permit and bed in Paiyun>

Noted with thank.

Last dec 2013, I was at SML n enquired the bus to Alishan. They told me due to road closure n whatever reasons, there was no service. They advised me to join a cab or other coach to Alishan. Somehow, I perceived this service as unreliable. Perhap, thing has improved now. Will check with them again.

I have went to Tataka for a few times and hike to Yusan several years ago.
The bus service has suspended for several months.
I took the bus immediately last year after the bus came into service again.
I'm still waiting the Alisan railway to came into full service, from Chiayi to Alisan. Then I will take the forest railway and bus #6734 again

The rail from chiayi to alishan is back quite sometimes. See a post by Touch Taiwan. But I prefer to take a bus up. The 1st bus is 0610hrs n reach Alishan about 0830hrs, giving u a whole day there.

It was by chance that a driver introduced me to Tataka if i like hiking. I hv not trek Yushan, but aiming in a near future. But i believe that there are many trails around Tataka for trekking without going up yushan.

It is a pity that most travelers take transportation as transportation only. I enjoy the scenes along the transportation. In fact, Alisan forest railway has the potential to be world heritage. It starts from subtropic zone (Chiayi) and end at temperate zone(Alisan). It also features for it spiral loop. You can find lots similar scenes in the world, but you cannot find a cheap and gorgeous railway in the world.

If you like hiking, I suggest you can have a one-day hike in Taroko. Much easier to access and apply. And much astonishing

Not the whole segment right to the top, only up till Fenqihu..

No issue for me about the time as i would prefer to spend at least 1-2N up in the mountains to relax...

Agreed...Something which cant be seen from taking the bus up, i would much prefer the railway when it's fully up and running.

Only up to Fenqihu for now but good start..

Last month May, I spent 3D2N at Taroko trekking. Really love it. I just came back from Alishan and Fenqihu for 5D5N. Really love the stay up in the Mt where I ate simple.

Plan to go up next year again. Aiming at Hehuanshan or Xueshan. Still novice in trekking.

A one-day hiking record from a Malysian in May
May 2013

Note:
1.Please check the weather and the time of sunrise and sunset. It often becomes thundershower in the Summer afternoon.
Nat'l Parks
2.Your safety is your responsibility!!
You may meet lot hikers all the way. Call for help if you need it.

Can yushan be conquered in the same day?(up and down) I've seen some who breaks the climb into many parts staying at many lodges. Just wondering is it necessary.

I'm not an experienced hiker nor i ever climb yushan. But what Sullivan said that safety is your responsibility. In the month of may n june, the sky is bright at 5am n sunrise is at 525am. This give some leeway. However, these months are wet season n rain in the afternoon. In the month of oct to dec, are dry n best to go up. But the sunrise is after 6am. So your time is shorter. Besides, going up need a permit. I don't think they will issue to lone non taiwanese.

Any way, good luck n take care. Plan carefully....
