No worries, you can take comfort that Tesla's returns should not be mediocre.

However, if you're after super stellar returns, Tesla is unlikely to provide that. I have to reiterate that there at least 3 stronger EV stocks as compared to Tesla.

For those buying Tesla stock tonight, what will happen? Since you won’t be eligible for the splits?

Nothing will happen. Buying and selling TSLA tonight, tomorrow or the whole of next week up till 28th Aug (split date) goes on as per normal.

For stock splits, record date is just for accounting purposes. Just ignore it.

As long as you hold TSLA shares on 28 Aug after market closes, it will be split automatically.
