Battery Breakthrough
Northvolt
Swedish battery maker and Tesla rival Northvolt said it has made history by producing its first lithium-ion battery cell.
Northvolt announced the Northvolt Elt gigafactory in northern Sweden manufactured the cell—the first to have been fully designed, developed, and assembled at a gigafactory by a homegrown European battery company. Currently, most lithium-ion batteries are made in North America and Asia.
The prismatic format cell is used to power electric vehicles, and Northvolt expects to start delivering it to customers next year. The company said it has already signed more than $30 billion in contracts with carmakers such as BMW and Volkswagen.
CEO and Co-Founder Peter Carlsson called the production of the cell “a great milestone,” and added Northvolt plans to greatly expand its manufacturing in the coming years to help Europe transition to clean energy. The company indicated it expects to have the plant in Västerås move towards having a capacity of 60 gigawatt hours per year.
