These are the FIs that have reached out for interviews:

Goldman - DA track
DBS - AI Track
Deutsche - AI Track
OCBC - DA & CC Track
Stan chart - CS Track
UOB - CC Track
Citi - CC Track

Do update this list if there’s new updates.

Hi all!

Just hope to keep everyone updated on the FI's progress in their interviewing activities.

I had a phone interview yesterday morning by Citibank in CC Track.

for those who went thru full stack interview, what do the hiring manager ask?
Depends on FI, DB ask more technical questions (especially on java) while SC looks more on your aptitude, how keen are you in tech and how you approach problems

Any chance the Financial institution pull out of the TFIP program halfway or don’t wish to hire the candidate after the 2 years program? What happens then?

Asking coz I read that DB lay-off recently

Conversion is possible.. given you would be familiar with the organisation in 2 years time to a certain extent. But given cost pressures, which is always the case for FIs (i come from SCB). The function is more likely to be moved out of Singapore instead if it can be done out of Singapore. You may think the skillset is essential, but given that things can be done remotely these days.. not surprising that they will ask a cheaper country to do it from there if it can be done so. Local banks are not spared as well, i had interviewed with DBS previously while being made redundant and had asked the the guy (Jasper - for those who attended the webinar, he's the rep from DBS) how likely would a IT role (data analytics type) by moved out. He also mentioned that eventually it would..
hi dalias, what was your previous role in DBS before you were being made redundant there? how long ago?

I have the same feedback too. the ultimate target should be working for tech company not finance company since IT is a cost to them.

In future more and more IT function going to be outsourced to 3rd party rather than in house. Look at now, the 1st IT function going to be outsource probably is cloud computing.

on the topic of outsourcing various IT stacks, it has happened in the past, at present and will happen in the future, especially when a country (example SG) develops, grows and standard of living get higher and higher (meaning your house more ex and your salary more ex too).

businesses will always seek to maximize profit and minimize cost. when the cost rises, businesses (be it bank, tech and others) will inevitable look to reduce their cost by shifting their ops to a lower cost country like MY, ID, IN, CH PH etc. remember, many call centres have already shifted to IN and PH years ago.

in my last interview at DBS, i asked the tech guy whether they are using AWS or Azure for cloud. he said that they do it in-house, meaning using 'DBS cloud' due to bank data sensitivity. based on this understanding, I think the bank management will probably keep higher level/critical tech ops locally and set up the bank's overseas tech (not so critically ones) ops out of SG.

this trend is pervasive not just in tech, but also in semiconductor and other industries.

so what can we do as Singaporeans? continue to upskill in growth sectors, increase productivity and stay relevant. In no time to come, for SG to continue to be relevant to the world economy, we cannot just rely on FDI (think IBM case). We likely need a paradigm shift to an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, culture and make it our DNA so that we can continue to survive and thrive.

If you ask me, are we there yet? Answer is NO. But I think we all know we have to innovate and be creative as a people and economy. It will take time because mindset needs time to change.

I believe there are many highly skilled tech pros here and also many aspiring tech guys. Do keep a lookout for a tech startup idea if you have. Who knows, when you explore further, it can lead to something interesting and your startup may grow big (another tik tok and tencent?). looking forward to our own tech giants flying the SG flag one day soon.

talk too much liao. time to get back to work now. haha. cheers :)

actually i also ask OCBC tech guys, they are also using in house "cloud". But in that case I am confuse why it is call "cloud". I mean they are just like old time ocbc internal data server right?

Probably they are just upgrading some SQL database to other more "cloud " like architecture. But for me they are still look like using internal data server.

i probably get confuse. But I asked they are definitely not using AWS, azure like public cloud

Haven't heard much about aspiring full stackers who applied to this program.

Anyone care to share your background, what made you choose full stack.

For me I only knew about this program in April, I was scrolling Facebook feed and saw tfip ibf ad. Clicked on it and was glad to see full stack development.
I don't have a computing degree but had practical experience building end to end web app. Felt that was not enough, needed more proper training before I can fully transit to a Dev role.

While coding and building web apps, just came to like the development process alot.
Be it debugging ,problem solving, design flow. Also felt that the tech community in sg is really supportive.

My goal is to be a software developer in the future!

I also do not have computer science degree. Did you apply for this program? Anyway over time to me full stack development will also involves operations as you need to understand CICD along with writing front end and back end codes.

At 1 point of time I also wrote quite a bit of backend codes and I realized that a lot of feedback from others are required so that continuously debug the code.

Since you mentioned "end to end", that also means that you need to manage hosting, deployment, maintenance.

Yup I applied for this program. Did u apply for full stack ?

Got an offer from AIA for Full-Stack.

I'm from civil engineering background, worked for a few years and decided that it is not worth the blood and sweat ive poured it.

Had been picking up some python/django through online courses (I would recommend CS50 and CS50W, really top notch). But my progress had kinda stagnant for a while now due to work commitment. My focus would now be on Javascript/React as the market is really looking at this. Rust/Web Assembly are cool too.

I chose full stack as my starting point as I really like solving logical problem, and through full stack web dev, I presume i would have more chance of coding and working at a fundamental level. Then i will decide what works best for me once i pick-up core skill from this program.

Just curious, have you tried react and redux for front end framework and django for backend framework? For me I am more proficient in writing python scripts though.

I did not try react yet, just watched a few youtube lesson on it.

But it is kind of a better way to create front-end application (which is responsive and modern) in an efficient manner.

Django itself is full-stack anyway, really easy to use for static website (like every action will make your page reload with Django serving the new Django-Html file), unless you pair it with front-end framework/javascript.

Hmm you don't really need a front end framework to make the web app responsive, just focus on the mobile first approach which is better to me. React/Angular are SPA whereby the website is not refreshed whenever you click on any route.

At 1 point of time I wrote quite a bit of python scripts for backend purpose without any framework. As I am using the serverless architecture, the framework that is catered for VM or containers is not compactable with AWS lambda which I uses for backend functions.

What i was trying to say is the the webpage that is kinda SPA itself, not the technical "responsive design" per se.

Yeah, we can write everything in vanilla javascript without React/Angular as well.

yeah you are right. Anyway just curious, you got writing front end scripts in typescript? for me when i tried angular last time, have to use typescript.

Nope, trying to focus on the fundamentals as of now, like algorithm basic and whatnot. Languages and framework will come pretty easy with time and practice.

Congrats Darkripper! You made it!

Thank you!

Anyway, i've just received email from DBS on the phone interview for Full Stack (The same 2 stage interview process). IIRC, DBS did not indicate hiring for Full Stack even for the webinar. Its kinda strange how IBF is handling the flow of CV and the feedback time between FI and IBF (FYI, my offer came 3 full weeks after the interview, pretty slow imo).

I also received the same email from DBS as you.
Just curious, since you already have an offer from AIA (they my 1st choice but never find me leh) and if you're waiting for more results or more interviews, do you have to accept AIA in principle first?

I asked coz I got an offer and have to reply by this friday but I still got interviews lined up, so don't want to accept first.

Oh boy.... life changing sia....

Congrats on the offer, may i know which FI is that?

Same for me, I picked AIA and Phillip, but only AIA reached out.

I did accepted AIA's offer, but will go through with the interview just to have a feel. Maybe you should check with IBF on the acceptance thingy. The overlapping offer and interview round is kind of confusing.

Now i even get UBS req for information on IBF-TFIP, i guess IBF kind of just send everyone's application now.

You can kind of peek into what stack they use by scouring their job posting.
