Is it the Z5's camera? I knwo the water painting phenomenon exists on their olde rphoens such as the M5 now...are you mixing them up, Esp since these phones have only *just* launched. kind adoubtful theres much noise on Reddit about them esp since they';re not released in the states as of yet.

same. if I wanted excellent camera, I'd just use my cm1. more interested in a compact waterproof phone with good battery life.

Want to get a black Z5 but I am very concerned about the left side photo blur issue reported by owners in Europe and Taiwan, where some folks reportedly went though 4 sets and eventually refunded; while another guy got lucky with a perfect set after 2 exchanges.

The left side blur in photos switches over to the right when the phone is flipped 180 degrees, suggesting a hardware issue with the lens. And different sets show different levels of blur.

I'll lean towards the other peep being too used to point and shoot, basically the iPhone kinda people, that is until more reviews come out for this.

I am surprised to hear of the "slowness" on the part of the verge tbh tho.

Hi, regarding the blur on left side of the photos, I'd say it's to be expected.

I actually gathered a lot of these info on reddit and XDA and I think its quite accurate.

Basically, because Sony uses wide lens angle to create a wider FoV (field of view) for its camera, when the lens is that stretched out, a "fishbowl" effect would be created (it's the law of physics)... it's kinda a bummer but definitely what Sony decided to sacrifice in order to have a wider FoV to fit more of a landscape scenery into the same shot, as compared to say, a LG G4.

a very close example of lens side blur would be last year's Galaxy S5's front camera. a search on the AndroidCentral forums would show that many users also find distortion and blur on the edges, because the S5's FFC is a wide-angle lens too.

also something else that I've read was that using 8MP on the Z5 can provide you the sharpest/cleanest image because the phone's sensor downsizes an entire 23MP image into 8MP.. aka pixel-binning , which was what the Lumia 1020 did back then with its 41MP.

when you use a full 23MP to shoot, you will get a lot more detail, but also a lot more noise because every pixel is now being spread instead of being binded into a smaller 8MP shot. if there is RAW support the noise can be reduced on Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop but that's more of something for hardcore photographers who strangely need 23MP worth of a photo for whatever they're doing.

this Vlad guy is very pro iPhone lol so it's quite awesome he finds the Z5's camera to be decent.

I suspect the lag/stutter could be due to various reasons, perhaps the biggest being a throttling of the SD810? IIRC that happened in the LG G Flex 2 too but it's speculation on my side at this point of time.

Actually....What you mention about the sharpness, is not true. This kind of effects are not due to the lens sony use. It seems more like the lens not aligned properly, as opposed to poor corner sharpness, at least through tthe pics i seen of suich issues thus far

Also. I find it wierd about Verge mentioning stuttering cause in the reddit thread people have not said anything about it being slow.....except sonys trademark camera and album lah, which has always been bloated and slow. Verge review says theres sttutering and lack of smoothness throughout the phone... which is odd. Personally don't think its the 810 Processor. They over engineered the cooling alrdy, plus 4k test shows it can handle it.

Agree that with a wide angle lens some blur (drop in sharpness) is expected on the extreme edges.
But, a lens is a concentric circle so similar FOVs in the image will exhibit similar levels of lens induced blur - a properly assembled camera will have similar levels of blur on both L & R sides as you traverse from the center to the edges of the image. For the blur to be on one side, it suggests that either the camera assembly was not done properly, or Sony is cutting corners and using lenses with terrible uniformity.

Check out the image links in the first post - the amount of blur is unacceptable for a flagship.

Checked the Verge review and did not see complaints of shutter lag...
