gps is a receiver so it doesn't use battery until its is used. I always leave it on and it doesn't has impact in battery life. probably you can turn off "scanning always available" under wifi advanced.

I think what he mean is the white dot and when you pull down the notification menu, you have accessory connected like the SBH50 etc.
