It really depends on one's time frame and objectives.
What I have observed is that many long term investors are actually short term traders - when they see a small profit, they cannot help themselves and locked in too early, only to miss out in the longer term run. And when these investors see a loss, they end up being long term investors as they just could not bear cutting loss. There are some examples on this forum
