You know, how many people keep saying "omg you need to nuke the HDD with 7 passes of Mersenne, and then run it through a degausser, then finally run it over with a truck, hydraulic press, shoot it with a shotgun, set it on fire, feed it into a shredder and grind it into powder"

But when something as simple as "oops I accidentally the MBR", and the free data recovery software that are supposed to work don't work, and "sorry this will cost $4,000 to recover the data"

normally for software glitch recovery is under $1k.

only when those head crash, platter issue, motor etc would cost much more.

as for the price. it's a matter of they can.

all could be avoided with proper backup, or basically online cloud storage liao. *that cost is minimum as compared to physical hard disk recovery.

Well, the idea is that you want to make it impossible (or prohibitively impossible) for anyone to recover any data from what you dumped. Just because it's possible to recover doesn't mean it's going to be easy or cheap ma, tio bo.

These people just want to make good sure their hidden prawn den doesn't get recognised down to the atom bit.

If you wanna get back your important data, its really a small price to pay your mistakes.

Imagine those PC that kena the Ransomware malware, they are paying a lot more than you.

On multi-user systems like Windows, if a user kena ransom ware, only the user's files get encrypted? Or other users' files on the same PC will also be encrypted?

By right if the malware runs under the affected user account, the user cannot access other user's files.

If User is just a normal user, only that user files are corrupted. If User is an Administrator, all other users files may be encrypted also.
