Yeah, depends on your needs which seem quite light compared to the others quoted above. Like them, I also do some x264 transcoding so waiting to see how much Haswell can improve things though I suspect my 3930K@4.5GHz may still rule.

hahas. yea. maybe my bro will need to change if he goes into media course in future.

Dark Shikari, one of the lead developers for x264 published a white paper on the performance gains from converting some functions to AVX2. You can see it here:

Introduction to AVX2 optimizations in x264

Always got to consider the lag time between actual AVX2 hardware coming out and the software which I use getting to speed using AVX2 commands in transcoding. Think the freeware transcoding apps which I use do not universally support even the original AVX commands yet eg. Ripbot264, xvid4PSP, Handbrake etc.

Which x264 apps do you use with AVX2 support?

I transcode into mp4 mainly for the kids' phones and tablets ie. leisure purposes so updated freeware is always welcome. :)

I use command line. =:p My workflow is like this:

FFMS2 (source) ---> Vapoursynth (video editing scripting language) ----> x264.exe

If I do need to use a GUI, I use MeGUI.

My x264 is self compiled as well. Although Komisar's builds are better than mine, I like the feeling of using something I compiled myself =:p

You could probably manually replace the x264 executable in those programs that you are using. Look for the x264.exe file inside their folders, and download it from either x264.nl or ...::: Komisar x264 builds :::....

The AVX2 instructions are already committed to x264. You can check Dark Shikari's git for details:

Heheh, I can admire the meticulous patience in the way you are whacking out your videos.

I take the shorter and easier path these days since my end result needs are much simpler as phones/tablets are relatively low-res displays.

btw, how did you end up with LGA1155 (and considering Haswell) instead of LGA2011 in the 1st place?

i still dunno how to code stuff for x264 lol

mee too voted for a maybe, still not sure its worth the upgrade or it would be better to bite the bullet to go x79 6core for my x264 encodings

If you are just transcoding for phones and tablets you might wanna consider using Quick Sync instead. Great speed/quality ratio.

As for LGA2011... I think the first reason is cost. Second reason is I believe the LGA2011 platform will always lag behind the mainstream (LGA1155/LGA1150) in terms of architecture. For me performance/watt is more important.

Vapoursynth scripts are written in Python, as opposed to that propietary language in Avisynth. The pros of Vapoursynth is that I found it to be more stable than Avisynth, especially when multi-threading. However, a lot of filters have not been ported to Vapoursynth natively, so depends on what filters you are using.

Compiling x264 is simple. There's a guide for it on doom10. Although Komisar's builds work beautifully.

I believe it's the 8bit version by x264.nl. If you want better quality per bitrate you might wanna try 10bit.

Anyway, does anyone know if the Xeon variants will be released at the same time?

It's very interesting to note that the LGA1150 discussion thus far focuses on x264 encoding boost more than any other subject matters. Quite a refreshing departure from most other LGA1150 threads that I have seen.

24/7 real world heavy duty crunching applications (and overclocking), something which I strongly subscribed to as opposed to all the smoke and mirrors of split second synthetic benchmarking and over the top component killing extreme volts.

Nice going in getting real work done, guys.

Fugly box art from leaks, check.

Results are consistent with earlier leaks and somewhat poorer than Intel's pronouncements (as expected), check.

The benchmarks don't look like the new instructions come into play (not unexpected), check.

Overclocking is also meh, if this is the typical silicon. Bclk straps may not matter much. Results match leaks, check.

Would be nice to see results of some encoding and other heavy number crunching applications. Still, it looks like only the new instructions can make a difference, check.

All in all, not sure if want Mehwell...

Actually, what is AMD doing? I haven't been keeping track of them, but they don't seem to have released new silicon for quite a while. Where's Steamroller?

Yeah, the CPU itself doesn't really seem too inspiring from that review.

Reverting back to the other half of the thread viz. mobo survey -

Which particular features do you look out for when buying your Haswell mobo?

Looks like got to do this on a feature by feature basis since most forum structures are not flexible enough to do as a proper detailed poll. Starting with

Intel GLAN

Important to you?

Personally, I am not really particular about the LAN chipset cos I am not a heavy net user/downloader/LAN gamer so as long as it is stable, it is good enough for me. :)
