actually hor, lets say veg tan itself. Is there also different cuts/grades de? Like maybe its the butt of the cow or say its back.

The grades in leather usually refer to the cleanliness of the hides. But even then terms such as "Top grade" or "grade A" don't usually mean much as there is no international standard grading system. The grades are usually only useful in comparing the relative cleanliness of the hides sold by the same supplier/dealer

Quality of the leather is another thing. This will depend on the practices and techniques adopted by the tannery where the leather comes from. Some of the most reputable tanneries that supply veg tanned leather in the US include Hermann Oak and Wickett and Craig. Then there is the traditional J & FJ baker in the UK whose leather is highly reputed both in the UK and worldwide. Most japanese obtain their quality leather from tochigi leather co.

There are also different types to veg tanned leather. Some may be hotstuffed with waxes and oils to produce skirting, bridle or harness leather.
Veg tanned which are not heavily stuffed are usually called tooling or carving leather.

As for the cuts, the more important ones to know are the back(or butt), shoulder and belly. The back is the strongest and cleanest. The shoulders are probably as strong but may have more blemishes. The belly is weaker and stretchy. Most belts are cut from the back as its the largest part of the hide with consistent cleanliness and uniform thickness.

Nice post. Just to add to the post, all hides have to be pressed flat through machines. A cow is not flat right? That's why the back is stronger, because it is already quite flat to start with. So the fibres aren't disturbed so much during the pressing process.

As most belts are 44 - 47 inch, cutting belts from a back will always produce a belt that is slightly too long. Trimming off these excess will result in some wastage.

So some makers will compromise on quality and cut from a double shoulder. Minimal wastage. But shoulders being more irregular in shape, once pressed flat by machines in tannery, produces some hollows spots in the flesh side. That's why some belts you see after some usage, especially the part always pulled through the buckle, the flesh side will 'fray' alot, and the belt starts to look like a dog has chewed on it.

Belt makers who wants the best quality, will cut from a back or double butt.

As there were some discussion about pouches before, here are some which we made and listed recently.

Hang on belt loop instead of belt. So that when u wear bermudas without belts in the humid city of Singapore, u still can use.
