Anyone has experience buying leather & tools from Taobao (suppliers from China)?

Care to share your experience and recommendation. Want to explore in leathercraft with my spare time.

:)

Thx in advance.

Bought before. Collected it at the shop or had them sent within China.

Tools bought/sold in Taiwan or HK are imported from China anyway.

Thx. Any advise or recommendation? Any recommended 'shops' to buy especially the leather? I think tools are pretty much standard.

I never buy leather online. I have to look and feel/touch before buying (leather).

Can you please recommend where to buy locally (or do you buy overseas?). Pls PM me if it's not too convenient to publicise the contacts. Thx.

I buy when I travel to China and HK.

There's a street selling leather stuff and leather in Guangzhou near The Bauhinia Hotel. Apparently there's a leather wholesale market in GZ which I haven't been to.

I buy in HK as well but I have not been there in 2 years. Can't remember the name of the store offhand.

I bought some yarns from them. Had it sent within China. So I don't know about them shipping/sending to SG.

Is it me or my eyes, the left one looks blue, the right one looks brown. Where is grey??

If you're asking bout why the right side ones feel rough, it's suede. Reverse side of tanned leather. It's normal to be rough.

Looking at the IMG again, forgotten where I've heard, some leather with blue hint are signs of interior leather. Don't take my word for it, I heard it somewhere, not confirmed.

Is from the same pair. So I'm quite curious why is there two different tone from a single pair. And does anyone have a gray/blue interior red wings ?

The brown is actually soft and "smooth" while the grey is coarse and rough

My wild speculation according to my knowledge of leather crafting, is that RW skived the flesh side of the leather to achieve an even thickness/consistency for the tongue area. This might be due to the leather side being too thick for the tongue area (maybe they choose a thicker side of the cattle for this).

You can always verify with RW for the correct answer, might even warrant an exchange since this should not happen?

Apparently to them this is normal. They taken few photos from their stock to prove it. I guess there won't be any negative effect on it.

Went down to Grand Leather today... There's a Mr Ong and a Mr Su, but I didn't ask who is who because both of them were simply too friendly and helpful :s13:
They're easily over 60s, but speak rather good English

Shared quite a few tips and showed me what other hobbyist have done. Bought a entire sheet @ 100 from them too :D
15" Macbook for scale

They are open on Monday to Friday, 8:30AM to 5:30PM
Mr Ong - 9138 9751
Mr Su - 9619 1322
One of them advised me to call them first, as both of them might not be in the shop sometimes
