yo... just read your faq and could do with more fine tuning though.. but still great work there...

IMHO you could elaborate more about the cpu L2 cache.. The size is not the only factor to performance. The no. of multi way associatives also affects the speed. Conroe utilises 16 way whereas yorkfield utilises 24 way. not sure of amd though..

This feature of some intel cpus is a power saving feature, intended to reduce power consumption when the user does not need it, reducing cpu multiplier reduces the system's overall speed for a good amount of power saved
This feature is not recommended to be turned off, as it helps to decrease overall system temperature and prolong cpu lifespan.
Turn it off if you wish, but you would be increasing your power consumption and thus place stress on the environment

hi...

if i turn the 2 setting off.. didnt o/c the processor.. n let it run at full speed

does it really affect the lifespan of the processor or is there any other factor that it get affected?

cos, my E8400 is running at full speed .. no o/c has been done.... processor temp is around 35 @idle

Okay just noticed the thread being sticky ;)
However, this also means non-relevant posts will be deleted, so please don't reply unnecessarily; but do help contribute.

But at the same time, my advice is not to cannibalize the other more mature sticky threads that address general system buying, GFX and RMA stuff. Instead, see if you guys can complement it. Becos if you guys start pulling stuff that are common across all those threads - you will jeopardize all of the sticky threads since it's going to confuse people.

newbie here , have question to ask.
how do i check the model of my motherboard & how to determine which graphic card is suitable for it.
my graphic card recently died on me >< totally clueless on how to check motherboard model..
appreciate yr help if u can answer my questions
download cpuz from www.cpuid.com and click on the motherboard tab, from there u can find information on your motherboard model, and what kind of graphics slot it supports, e.g. agp, pci, or pci express :)

alternatively you can open up your casing and check the slot type comparing with pictures of the various possible gfx card slots to ascertain the type of slot you have :)

from there, you can proceed to the graphics card buyer's guide to find the best graphics card supportable by your board and your pocket to satisfy your needs :)

About Hard disks

Why is my Hard disk size smaller than the one i bought?
Reasons:
Hard disk size is measured in decimal units, e.g. a WD 640 GB contains 640 Billion Bytes of space

BUT, the hard disk size is smaller than what is actually bought.
Assuming you have only one partition on the hard disk
Your computer reads Computer size in binary not in decimal, but computer hard disk sizes are made in decimal numbers
Thus 1 kilobyte of data is actually 2^10 bytes, not 1000 bytes
2^10 = 1024 bytes
1 mb ~ 1thousand kilobytes = 2^10 * 2^10 = 2^20 = 1024 x 1024 = 1 048 576 bytes, not 1 000 000 bytes
1 gigbyte ~ 1 thousand megabytes = 2^10 * 2^10 * 2^10 = 2^30 = 1024x1024x1024 = 1 073 741 824 bytes

So 640 GB or 640 Billion Bytes Decimal is actually 640 000 000 000 / 1024^3 = 596.046 GB
some space may not be allocated, as 8mb is unallocated when a new partiton is created, to be updated when i find out :)

Hi guys. I have a Hitachi 160gb. Going by the above calculation i should have around 149gb. But why does Windows say my Local Harddisk total size is 127gb? Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

go to disk management under control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management

check if there are other partitions in the hard disk, there is likely to be one, if it is a hard disk from a laptop which has never been reformatted.. this sector is hidden and used for recovery purposes.. my toshiba tecra m5 also like that, but biggest problem is my hard disk is 80GB not 160 GB :s22:
so the amount of space i have is 67 gig not 70+

Hmm...just wondering, would it be advisable to get say..a 1GB 4870 rather than a 512MB 4870, if my monitor is 22"..?

seriously yes.. 1GB here > 512 since the 4870 is a very fast card, not enough ram to buffer will bottleneck your card :)

So...the resolution is okay?

I usually tot 24" or abv then need 1GB version of gfx.

And since the price of 1GB 4870 is quite high compared to 512MB pricing, i hope it's a right choice

Yup, i went to disk management.

I have 127.99gb NTFS and 25.39gb unallocated. Anyway to add this unallocated space with the NTFS partition? If possible, are there any side effects like loss of data or even physical damage to the HDD?
