Hi there Seannie, what about Japanese brands such as Mikoto?

Also, anyone in the trade can share prices of crizal/hoya lenses? index 1.6.. is $160-179 a fair/good deal? :s

Never come across the brand Mikoto. I only know the brand "migoto" which Straits/Grand optical carries. But i dont like its fitting.

If you interested in jap brands, you may like to try the brand "dan" which i saw in nanyang optical. Seems good fitting. There is one other more upmarket brand called 999.9 but few shops carry it & i dont own it myself, but i have tried them on in a shop before & i think shd be not bad as well but costly. The reason why i never buy it is that i dont like the sales service of that shop.

yes, you are right in that plastic is more prone to scratches, but the crux of the problem is how careful you handle your specs. If anyhow place or throw your glasses around or put inside your pocket etc, even glass lenses will get scratches. I ever bought new glass lenses that are already with scratches when presented to me by the salesgal. She kept looking at the glass lenses & keep wiping with cloth, presumably thinking that those can be removed. When i got home & i only realised that they are scratched, it dawn on me that even glass can be scratched if you not careful.

But frankly speaking, plastic lenses also have anti-scatch coatings so actually they are still a better option, considering the comfort factor. If you wear specs all the time, you would want the weight of your specs to be minimised as much as possible, so everything counts, even the lenses add weight on your nose although some opticians tell you that plastic lenses dont count for alot of weight but they still do affect how comfy you feel throughout the day.

Even with plastic lenses, i can feel the difference in weight when im wearing a frame with smaller lens size compared to a frame with bigger lens size. I conclude that size of lenses play a part in the weight as well, and not just the lens material or frame itself. If you really like glass lenses, i recommend getting a very small frame with corresponding small lens size so that you dont feel it heavy. BUT you got to have a frame that is curved enough at the temples to fit the width of your head else the frame will keep digging into the sides. If you have a small head then no prob.

Thanks for your comments, Seannie. I have been using glass all these while.

Nope, sadly, im not in the optical trade. But i might invest & go open one optical shop of my own one day if i strike it rich, but then again i will get optician & optometrists to work for me instead hahaha. Im just interested in the specs hardware stuff, but not the contact lens stuff.

You can try steffan preutz they are v light.

Photofusion will turn dark/clear faster than regular transition. However, it should not be too much expensive compared to good quality transition. One point to note is that Photofusion lens are flatter. Thus if your frame is curvy, regular good transisiton lens will suit the frame better.

I just ordered a pair yesterday. The price difference between the CZ 1.6 Photofusion and Hoya 1.6 transition, is just $70.

Is there any recommended optical shop?
I read on the earlier pages abt one at queensway shopping centre and one at thomson.
Not very sure abt the terminology of the different lenses and brands of frames but i'm looking for lenses that are anti-reflective, anti-UV, preferably 1.67/1.6 and frames that are lightweight and metallic looking.
After reading through part of this thread, I think i'm settling for Hoya.
Looking to find a good optical shop that won't chop carrot.
Can any thread regulars advise? TIA.

Just wondering, where do you guys usually buy your spec frame? Any place that sells those very nice looking frame?

I'm looking at getting a tagheur spec. Any idea where to get it with a good price?

Another thing, when you guys buy the frame, do you all buy the frame only or with the lens?

Thanks!
