In order not to offend rolex lovers, ah yeo wrote a long reply but in short 笨鱼 YOLO.

imho, for the money you're prepared to spend on a speedy, why not consider the omega SEAmaster professional chronometer 2254.50.

you get:
- superior water resistance (300m vs 50m).
- AUTOmatic movement vs manual winding.
- superb lume if you like lume like me.
- chronometer grade vs non-COSC.
- a better SEAmaster clasp vs SPEEDmaster clasp.
- the satisfaction that you've a rarer piece on your wrist.

but that's just me. if you're still keen on a speedy, I'm happy for you. cheers. :D

Thanks for the advice, let me take a look at that model
I'm relatively new to watches so still going to research a little before spending there

Yesterday went down to see the Ball engineer II pilot GMT .. the feel of the watch is solid.. I tried before Oris 65 but the feel is different.. I haven't see TV commercial before Poster also seldom .. more of omega, rolex, logines.. Maybe I will go see other brand before take a dip..

Rolex still far from my league.. want a daily beater alternative to my G shock 4 years old & seiko criteria 6years old(repair once due to my careless hit the wall causing the glass break)

if you love the ball at $3k, get it cos your enjoyment is what matters.

however, do note that the tritium gas tubes in the ball will glow half-strength in 12 yrs and will die in 25. and you'll definitely suffer a huge depreciation if you try to sell it off.

if rolex is your long-term goal, you can consider saving up a while longer and get that rolex with the money you'd otherwise spend on the ball.

a quick search turned up a pre-owned gmt master IIc ceramic bezel dated jul 2015 (means it qualifies for rolex full 5 yr warranty) can be had for $8,800 (i don't know the seller, nor am i recommending him at all - just using his ad as a price guide only).

the rolex will hold its value much better, for sure. plus the chromalight lume will glow for longer than the tritium gas tubes.

at $10/day, you can steadily save $8,800 in 2 yrs 5 months. so rolex is actually within anyone's league with disciplined saving (and a huge incentive for watch-loving smokers to quite smoking too!) :D

do note that the seamaster 2254.50 has been out of production since 2008, so what's available are pre-owned. but - it's one of the few watches that actually cost more to buy now than when it was new - so you can get a gauge of its popularity.

not saying you should get it instead of the speedy moonwatch. just something for you to consider. and if you love it enough like me, great. plus, it's current price is relatively affordable and it will hold its value in the long run. if not, be happy with what you eventually buy.

but do read more, research more. you wouldn't want to be a victim of impulse purchases like me. cheers.

Hey Ed, just a curious question from me with no offence intended. For your vast collection through the years, many of which appear to suggest that you favour Rolex homages, never occurred to you to get one of the actual watches?
Sell all and buy rolec liao
In order not to offend rolex lovers, ah yeo wrote a long reply but in short 笨鱼 YOLO.

YOLO,HFTL- You Only Life One,Hoot Fast Talk Later,

。。YOLO! 。。

bro, dun get me wrong. a rolex sub will always be a rolex sub. it has the seh, the value retention and you feel shiok/proud that you worked hard and saved prudently to afford an iconic watch that anyone the world over recognizes. when purchased pre-owned, you can even break even easy, so it's like wearing a luxury watch (almost) rent-free. what other watches can be like that? not many.

i fell in love with the omega 2254.50 since i laid eyes on its photos. its huge triangle hour marker at 12 o'clock just grabbed my attention. i was lucky to acquire one at a good price, so i keep sharing why i love it so much - like it being oop (relative rarity), a cult watch with classic design and dial/hands that many watch lovers agree is handsome, has date window color matching the dial, gorgeous wave dial, with lume that can go toe-to-toe with a seiko monster, chronometer-grade movement, slim, slight dome single AR coated sapphire crystal, excellent clasp, beautiful speedy-style bracelet, short lyre-style lugs (= no overhang + 41mm case can be worn by people with modest wrist), re-sale price well-maintained, etc.

every one of us has our own unique taste. just buy what we fancy and catches our eyes.
our money, we spend on what we like and within our means can liao. we wear also song.

strongly agree with buy what we like and within means .. like an old saying one man meat is another poison

for me within means is when you have left aside an certain amount for rainy days, kids expense (education, tour , ...) anything extra then mean within means

last sentence is most correct .. Wear also song !!

I don't agree with recommending based on value retention but this, this I agree with

Ok la, I guess I get your pt regarding the rent-free part. But best is of course buy something you really love and keep it the rest of your life.

Glad to see someone love their watch so much :)

Honestly wanted to TLDR.. this chinese text thing under WOT mode, does get on my nerves , but since I was the one who asked the question, I feel obliged to read through.

Do not agree with some of your analogies or IMHO somewhat dismissive conclusion that marketing > horological significance, but I respect your perspectives. End of the day, as several guys have pointed out, we spend our money and pursue our hobby the way we like to. No right or wrong, so long there is no ethically questionable behaviour involved. Appreciate your replies; I can imagine the thought and effort put into them. Your passion in watches (and languages) is IMHO very commendable too! Cheers and TGIF :)
