It's more of having to ship all the way back and waiting la. Then if got problem ship back again. End up hardly see the watch you buy. But only if got problem la.

It's grand seiko after all, so much issue that's a problem
Shipped back my nomos to German, they do such a good job.
Insured via FedEx back to me.

Hmm. May consider getting my credor service since spouse back in Japan a mth

some years back I was in a similar situation.......the choice is clear.

On the 5712:
4 years back I was shopping for a YG GMT and my sales says got surprise for me and she took out a 5712. Didn't know much about patek so just took a wrist shot and asked the guys here. Overwhelming vote on the patek. She actually held on to it for me for almost two weeks. Honestly i didnt like it that much but "a patek is a patek" and "its a 5712" or so they say. Over time I learnt to appreciate it: the bracelet (very comfy), the design, and my fave part is the gold micro-rotor which is uncommon. Somehow don't like the date window on the 5711 as well. If can, push to a 5726. Love the symmetry.

A fren was about to get a RM010 back then for ard the same price (40k++)and jio me to get one as well. Until this day I am still kicking myself for not getting the RM010: She recently sold it for close to 70k.

Found the pic:

yeah you're right, most probably it's going to be the Patek.

A hypothetical YM40 in steel/white gold with cerachrom bezel looks amazing to me...

You said something like you were around town and happemed to go into an AD. Just curious, you were not targetting any particular watch and are rewarding yourself for hard work? When was your last watch purchase? I find rewarding oneself after a long time of hard work very satisfying. :)

yeah, the design look not bad .. especially the limited design. like buay pai .. quite unique ..... only lug to lug 52.5 an issue. :(

in your opinion, will there be issue to service the movement later on ?? I rem you mention before its difficult to find a watch maker to service china movement here. thanks

(潮) 上海計時機芯,对照 ETA7750 是無麽大差别啦。是呾部件咧。。。就有淡薄差别。。。唔是每様會噻对换概。
平常洗機保养,無問題,
修理惊部件出問題,無尙换。。。

in the crazy world of collecting, several possible factors can contribute to an item's perceived value, of which rarity and defects which you've correctly mentioned are 2 principal ones. a subset of rarity is when an item is discontinued. :s13:

herd mentality also plays a huge part. once value start climbing, every man and his pet may start salivating for one, even those who are clueless or lack passion, either for profit or as a status symbol. :s22:

i am curious as to the original rolex explorer with painted dial. even though many specimens were produced during its long production history, they command a healthy premium today and aren't easy to source. anyone has any idea as to why?

- did the majority got abused as a tool watch till they got discarded?
- are they being kept for future profit?

:s11:

This is entirely my own take on your question:

Watches break down with age > broken watches are discarded
Even if the watches lasted, people inevitably like to replace old stuff with new stuff (consumerism?) > old watches get discarded

Furthermore, to my understanding, Rolex was but one of many illustrious swiss watch makers back in the days before the discovery of quartz revamped the entire watch industry and somewhat forced the 'creation' of the swiss watch luxury image/branding by the remaining players (that included Rolex). The desirability of a used Rolex from that era could well be not much more than a (with all due respect) Casio today.

To give a modern example, the first generation plain colour Swatches sold like hot cakes and should be aplenty in the market. Yet the current price for such original specimens are pretty high. I believe the same reasons cited above apply.

Next up. Explorer II with ceramic bezel

I think the purists will consider such a model a sell-out.

The explorer has, throughout its history, been produced in steel and only steel models, staying true to its tool watch roots.

Of course, one might argue that ceramic isn't a precious metal and is a progression to leverage on technology improvements..
