If your watch doesn't have anti-magnetic features, then better don't place it near. Just to be safe.

I prefer the gen2 over the outgoing model.

The main things that I really like about the gen2:

1) The bracelet has the ability to hang straight down, making it wear and look right for people with smaller wrists like myself (16.5cm). The newer model sticks out of the width of my wrists despite technically being smaller by 1mm due to the flare of the bracelet as it transits from the lugs. When you try both on, it is immediately apparent they wear very differently. I'd say it wears about the same as a 40mm Rolex.

2) The thinness of the watch at 9mm. It feels almost as thin as my Nautilus. It's a unique feeling. It's heavy, it's broad, but thin at the same time. A very comfortable wear once you size it correctly. I wore it 1/2 link too tight for some time, and after I added 1/2 link, it easily became one of my most comfy watches. The clasp takes up quite a bit of space, so when you first size it, you'd tend to size it slightly smaller than necessary.

3) The guilloche dial which the gen3 doesn't have. But this is probably an old-man preference. I just like the fact that someone spent decades of their lives learning to guilloche something, and I'm wearing that on my wrist.

4) This applies to the gen3 also: it's 150m water resistant, which makes me want to wear it even more roughly than my Rolex's. Again, strange feeling since it's much more finely finished than a Rolex but yet encourages you to thrash it.

5) This applies to the gen3 also: the coherency of the maltese cross motif across the entirety of the watch. The attention to detail of how the motif is applied is very enjoyable.



Things I don't like about it:

1) The date window position. At 4.30, the position feels strange to me.

2) The date size. I find it impossible to read in darker lighting as it's so small (younger people with better eyesight wouldn't have this problem)



Things that don't matter to me:

1) It's much more anti-magnetic than the gen3

2) It's got a JLC derived movement

intend to buy pre owned one
Saw a 2013 el primero open for about 7k on Carousell and a Cartier tank XL for about 4.5k, both models I’ve been eyeing for awhile now but never willing to pay retail for them .
Will be my first time buying pre owned watches so want to bring them to service after I purchase them

Nice review. I also actually think that the guilloche on white dial is very nice. The brushed finishes as good as the gen 3? Really keen now and added to my shortlist. haha

I did have the 2 watches side by side at the AD. Although I did not specifically pay attention to the brushed finishing between them, the overall impression is that both gens are finished to the same standards.

I did not discern the gen 2 having a lower standard of finishing. In fact should say, the Gen 3 has kept up with the gen 2.

They are both great. The main difference in terms of looks is the gen 3 has a cleaner, more modern looking dial.

But the flare of the bracelet at the lugs and the thickness of of the whole watch of the gen 3 were the deal breakers for me.

If you must have micro adjustment in your bracelet and a see through case back, then gen 3 is your only choice.
