Looking to get a mechanical Watch for fun. Was looking at slim dhermes at first since it can help with my wife’s hermes profile building. Then I saw audemar piguet royal oak and Patek philip complications. Just wondering what’s the horological difference between a 10k Watch and a 100k Watch? Assuming both are stainless steel and not rare metals?

not into Rolex because already having to build profile for wife’s birkin. Don’t want another profile building brand.

if your wife is just looking to get a kelly or birkin, might as well just pay the premium and get it from a reseller. No point buying a hermes watch (just a fashion watch) with lousy resale value. The premium for a birkin/kelly is definitely lesser than 10k. Unless your wife really likes the hermes watch then its another story.

I guess it’s not just Birkins but all 3 bags. She already got Constance from Hermes and now looking for the other 2. I guess I also like their other products like shoes, belts, wallet etc so it’s not purely just for profile building.
Their Watch is actually Swiss mechanical not just a cheap quartz Watch branded for high prices.

If you already like other products for profile building, you don't have to worry about the watch.

It's quite unfair to compare slim d'Hermes to Patek Philippe as the price bracket is completely different, 10k at PP cannot buy anything at all. Whereas compared to brands in the same price range, e.g. Tag heuer, Hermes is not a terrible watch.

The quality difference between PP and other brands is huge, especially inside the movement. The refinement of the finish, build quality, on top of brand heritage and historical significance. When I started looking at PP, I didn't fully understand what it meant when people told me that they are just made on a different level than other brands, but now having collected and experienced it myself, I can tell you even Rolexes feel and look cheap compared to Patek. But these are things that the common man doesn't usually care for, more a watch enthusiasts' thing.

I know some of their watches are mechanical but no matter what, you cant shake off the fashion watch label just like chanel even with their J12.

I think you should buy their other products for profile building and get your wife a better watch imo.

Thanks, yeah I’m just trying to understand the actually difference between say a 10k Rolex vs a 100k PP if case material is both the same. Is the internal movement that different between them?

I totally understand even if it’s just slightly better it could be 10x more expensive as how luxury products go with diminishing returns.

Your question to some people here would be like asking why a Ferrari costs 1mio and a Toyota costs 100k when both have an engine and runs on 4 wheels. Same for why a Birkin costs so much and a leather Coach bag costs so much less.

If you want a "precision" answer to that, you need to do a lot of reading up in various horology websites, would be hard for anyone one to do a full writeup to explain.

Oh, and to be fair, I think Hermes do have some nice watches; was tempted by a few myself. But true to what some has pointed out, PP is a different class of its own, even when compared to Rolex.
