Me rikes rolex, especially the submariner (Y) however don't think I am old enough for it uh.. later wear this ocean 1 to school my friends all suan me I used to like steinhart's nav b 44mm automatics, but no open caseback jin emo.. and I keep going to the website to look at it till sian of the design riaos

well..these were the exact 2 models i was eyeing for iwc during my hunt since they are of almost the same price range...but really they are both different watches. my heart was slightly drawn towards the mark xvi before i went down. but once i tried both on my wrist, i knew immediately what i like.

A basic movement with what looks like a printed dial, I mean, there really isn't much to fancy on that watch imo, other than the altimeter-inspired date window and the Faraday Cage.

For me, there isn't much details on the dial to be liked (as compared to the sunken subdials on the 3777 which gives visual depth). Perhaps the smaller case size and simple look appeals to you given that you are considering between this and the Portofino Chrono, but do remember that if you are concerned with watches that are visually big, the Portofino Chrono has a thin bezel too. Larger dial constitutes a bigger looking watch, at least visually.

Personally, if I were to embark on IWC Pilot line, the minimum should be the 3777 / 3717. Your preference may of course vary. I probably am also bias towards a tad more detailing.

If you absolutely am not interested in veering off your choices, then the black dial Portofino Chrono with milanese mesh is my choice.

Any watch recommendations for a guy reaching 20? my budget is around 600-800 only, planning to get one for myself after intern end as a reward of clearing another milestone and completing my first ever job in my life currently would preferably like an automatic watch, all my watches are all quartz.. something presentable for formal and casual occasions ^^

Thanks! I dropped the idea of polishing it... the scratches does give it a bit of character!

Dropped off the destroyed strap at a strapmaker and he will be cannibalising the OEM black plastic at the end of the strap and customising a new honey-brown croc strap. Have to wait 2 weeks!

After telling my dad what I did, he asked if he could have the watch back!

Send it for welding at richemont. Dun have to polish.

maybe i can help since I have both the portofino (chrono) and the pilot mark 17 (not 16). firstly, they are very different watches. so you gotta look at how much "wear-time" u think the watch will have? base on what you might ask? base on your lifestyle, your dressing, etc.

for me, due to my style (dressing etc), i wore it and decided on the portofino. i only bought the mark 17 as my "casual" watch and now its collecting dust. so u might wonder, why collecting dust? because as a casual watch, i realised there are so many other options that can be a lot cheaper for the same look (lets be honest, a pilot watch is just the design, slap in whatever brand also the same "feel" more or less), or for around the same price (i believe a pilot 16 is <$4k since a mark 17 now is $6.8K retail) you can get a more unique looking watch (Panerai, for one). and that was what happened to me, i bought a pam soon after, and the mark 17 has just been on the back-burner. however, i do agree that the looks of a portofino auto can also be easily found in other cheaper alternatives, but at least its a more versatile watch than a pilot, which you obviously can't wear it to work.

and if all else doesn't convince you, the cheaper price tag of a portofino (i believe you looking at auto, not chrono, so its $5.4 retail) should. and if really disappoint you, you can always sell off the portofino better than the mark 16 since its brand new etc.

hope this helps, but in all, its still only my opinion and experience. such matters you will have to decide for yourself even though you can't seem to decide right now.
